Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Brown’s Go-Ahead Shot Gives Nusseibeh Her First Collegiate Victory

Junior guard Shaunae Brown's runner with 13 seconds left solidified the first head coaching victory for Sahar Nusseibeh as Canisius defeated Colgate, 61-58, Saturday at the Koessler Athletic Center in non-conference women's basketball action.

Brown led the Griffs in scoring for a second consecutive game, netting 13 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Kayla Jackson scored 11 points and hauled in seven rebounds, while Dani Haskell chipped in with 10 points for Canisius (1-3).

Alexa Brodie scored a game-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists for the visiting Raiders (1-3).

GAME RECAP
Jenna Paul opened the game with a pair of three-pointers, part of a personal eight-point spurt, giving the Raiders the early edge.

Trailing 8-1, Canisius went on a 16-2 run over four minutes in the first half, sparked by Brown and freshman Athina Lexa, who each scored five points during the stretch.

The Griffs later used an 11-2 run during the middle portions of the second quarter to further distance themselves from the Raiders, increasing their lead to 32-17.

Canisius played stifling defense against Colgate in the first half, forcing the Raiders to shoot just 26.5 percent from the floor (9-for-34). The Griffs shot 42.9 percent (12-for-28) in the opening half, including 40 percent from three-point range (4-for-10).

A three-point shot by Ella Väätänen on the Griffs' opening possession of the third quarter gave Canisius its largest lead of the day, 17, before Colgate slowly chipped away at the Blue and Gold's advantage.

Brodie converted on a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in the third quarter, cutting Canisius' lead to 42-33 going into the fourth quarter.

Canisius led by as much as 12 with 5:13 left in the final frame, but Colgate utilized a 16-7 run over 4:35 of game action, capped by a Taylor Golembiewski three-pointer with 38 seconds left to tie the game at 56-all.

With 13 seconds left, Brown lofted a running layup off the top-left corner of the backboard that fell through the net to give the Griffs a 58-56 lead.

Erika Joseph made the latter of her two free throws, giving Canisius a 59-56 edge with seven seconds remaining. Golembiewski countered Joseph's free throw with a jumper to cut the deficit to one.

Brown then sealed the game with a pair of free throws with one second remaining.

Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh's Postgame Comments
"I am extremely proud of our team. They just found a way to get it done today. I know they were up big in the third, it dwindled a little bit, but to see their response and their bounce back to that and the fact that they found a way to finish this game with a win, we're extremely proud as a staff.

"Your home crowd makes all the difference in the world. We are very grateful for those who showed up today and can't wait to see those who are coming back on Tuesday. It makes all the difference when you can finally play at home in front of your supporters. I saw a lot of familiar faces from the athletic department, from across campus, some of our practice guys came through to support our girls, families, friends. It makes all the difference when you're fueled by those people in the stands.

"Our returners have done a tremendous job stepping up. It's been a couple different people every single game and when you can count on all of your returners to bring something, it's invaluable, especially with a team of eight underclassmen. When you have a team of eight underclassmen, you really rely on those returners to be your anchor and those consistent people for you. And I thought [Shaunae Brown] and Kayla [Jackson] were just tremendous. We just always know we can count on them and that's a beautiful thing."

Game Notes
• Canisius won the 39th all-time meeting between the two Empire State foes. The Griffs improved to 24-15 overall against the Raiders and have now won 17 of the 21 meetings on home court.
• Freshman Rhay Porter hauled in a team-best 10 rebounds for the Griffs, becoming the first freshman with a double-digit rebound total since Danielle Sanderlin in a road game against Marist on Feb. 11, 2018. Porter also blocked two shots, extending her team lead in blocks (5).
• The Griffs had seven individual players record a steal in Saturday's victory, the most players to record a steal since also having seven against Vermont on Dec. 21, 2018.
