Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth Quarter Defense Aids Women’s Basketball to Victory

Canisius gave up just two Detroit Mercy field goals on 17 attempts in the final quarter, allowing the Golden Griffins to come away with a 64-55 victory Tuesday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Sophomore guard Dani Haskell scored a game-high 24 points for Canisius (2-3), while freshman guard Cheyenne Stubbs nearly doubled her season output in points with a 13-point effort. Senior guard Erika Joseph chipped in with 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half.

Monique Pruitt posted 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and a pair of blocks off the bench for the Titans (0-5). Irene Murua logged a double-double for the visitors, scoring 10 points and having 12 rebounds.

GAME RECAP
Canisius was held without a field goal for nearly the first six minutes of the game before the Griffs converted on four straight field goal attempts and made two free throws as a part of an 11-0 run, avenging a 9-3 deficit halfway through the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Haskell scored nine straight points for the Griffs on a trio of three-point field goals, aiding Canisius to a 30-25 halftime lead.

The Griffs entered the locker room shooting 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from the field, including a 5-for-9 (55.6 percent) clip from beyond the arc.

Detroit Mercy opened a six-point lead after the Titans went on a 12-0 run over 2:30 in the third quarter.

Joseph closed out the third frame netting Canisius' last eight points, avenging the six-point deficit and drawing the game at 44-all heading into the final quarter of regulation.

Canisius forced Detroit Mercy to miss 15 of its 17 field goal attempts in the final quarter en route to the victory. Six of Detroit Mercy's 11 points in the last 10 minutes came from the free-throw line.

As a team, Canisius shot a season-best 39.6 percent (19-for-48) from the floor and 42.3 percent (11-for-26) from beyond the arc.

Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh's Postgame Comments
"Today was a great win. It was not the prettiest of games. Game plan-wise, we struggled a little bit, but to see our young women after a challenging third quarter and respond in the fourth, we are very proud of that.

"Everything about [Cheyenne Stubbs] was focused today. Her body language was extremely focused from shoot-around to the pregame talk, I watched her and she was leaning forward, eyes as big as they could be, just completely locked in. When you practice those habits and show how locked in you are with your presence, it naturally carries over to your focus level and her execution was tremendous.

"At the end of the day, our intention is to win where we pack the KAC and everybody wants to come see Canisius women's basketball win. The saying, 'If you build it, they will come,' that's what we're trying to do here. We are trying to win some games at home where we take pride of having homecourt advantage and it becomes a true advantage where more and more people, more and more Griff fans, want to watch us win. We are going to work our best and try to make that happen."

Game Notes
• Tuesday was the seventh meeting between Canisius and Detroit Mercy. With the victory, the Griffs took the lead in the all-time series, 4-3, and have won three of the four contests at the Koessler Athletic Center.
• Canisius made 11 shots from three-point range on Tuesday, which is the most since making 12 at Marist on Feb. 13, 2020.
• Haskell made five shots from three-point range, which is a single-game best for the sophomore. She is the first Griff with five-plus makes from beyond the arc since A.J. Timbers on Feb. 20, 2020, against Manhattan.
• Senior forward Kayla Jackson logged 10 rebounds, good for her fifth career double-digit rebounding total. Four of her five such games have occurred at Canisius and three of which have occurred this season.
• Freshman Rhay Porter extended her streak of games with a block to four games, increasing her team lead in blocked shots to six. Porter is the first freshman with a block in four straight games since Sara Hinriksdóttir had a four-game streak during the 2015-16 season.
