Volleyball Scores 3-0 Sweep of Iona

Canisius senior Camila Vazquez led the way with 10 kills, while senior Hannah Nelson and junior Ella Loussia combined to drop down eight service aces, as the Golden Griffins scored a 3-0 sweep of Iona in MAAC volleyball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
 
The win, Canisius' third straight, improved the Blue and Gold 9-14 overall and 9-5 in league play. Iona fell to 7-16 overall and 5-9 in conference action with its sixth straight loss. The Griffs won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-13, 25-21.
 
MATCH RECAP
In the first set, Canisius led 15-12 and then pulled away from the Gaels with a 4-0 scoring spurt that made the score 19-12 in favor of the home team. Senior Ashley Kekeisen helped fueled the Griffs' offensive effort in the first set, as she posted three kills to go along with seven assists. In the second set, Canisius took a 2-0 lead over Iona in the match with the 25-13 victory, highlighted by six kills by Vazquez and a pair service aces from Nelson midway through the frame. Canisius was efficient in the second set as a team, as the Griffs posted a .424 team attack percentage in the stanza.
 
With the score tied at 8-8 in the third set, Canisius used a 9-1 scoring run to pull away from Iona and seal the win. In that scoring spurt, Nelson dropped down three-straight aces to make the score 16-9 in favor of the Blue and Gold. The Griffs closed out the match by scoring the match's final five points, featuring a pair of kills by senior Rachel Kinney, who ended the contest with eight kills to go with six digs and a block assist.
 
Vazquez's 10 kills came on 18 swings, and she was charged with just one error on the day, for a .500 attack percentage. She also recorded a solo block and a block assist in the victory. Nelson added seven kills, five digs and two assists to her five aces on the day, while Kekeisen chipped in a match-high 26 assists to go along with her five kills and 10 digs. Junior libero Bree Long led the match with 22 digs, and she also recorded a kill in the victory, her third of the season.
 
GAME NOTES
• Sunday marked the 51st all-time meeting between Canisius and Iona. The Griffs lead the series 28-23 after scoring a sweep of the Gaels this year.
• Sunday stands as Canisius' second sweep of the season, with both of those 3-0 wins coming in MAAC play.
• With the victory, Canisius moved to 7-5 all-time in matches played on Halloween.
• The 10 kills for Vazquez on Sunday gives her double-digit kills in three of the team's last six contests.
• Nelson ended the weekend with 11 service aces in 38 service attempts. She now has 104 career services aces to her credit, which ranks 11th in program history.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius will officially close out the home portion of its 2021 schedule on Thursday, Nov. 4, when the Griffs play host to long-time rival Niagara at the Koessler Athletic Center. Match time is set for 6 p.m., and the game will also be broadcast live on ESPN+.
