Seniors Shine as Volleyball Beats Manhattan

Six Canisius seniors accounted for 43 of the Golden Griffins' 47 kills on the day and the team's defense held visiting Manhattan to an .086 attack percentage on the power of 14 blocks as the Blue and Gold posted a 3-1 victory in MAAC volleyball action on Senior Day Saturday at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Griffs won the match by scores of 25-14, 26-24, 20-25, 25-18 to improve to 8-14 overall and 8-5 in league play. Manhattan fell to 2-15 overall and 2-11 in conference action with its eighth loss in its 10 contests.

MATCH RECAP
With a starting line-up that featured all seven members of the program's senior class, Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match with the 25-14 win in the first set, thanks to six kills by senior Rachel Kinney and four service aces by fellow senior Hannah Nelson. Canisius took a 2-0 lead into the intermission thanks to a 26-24 win in the second set. The Griffs led that set 24-22 before Manhattan evened the score on a kill by Abby Wilde and a service ace from libero Ashley Chan. However, the score swung in the Blue and Gold's favor moments later after Chan served the ball into the net and Wilde was charged with an attack error to end the frame.

Out of the intermission, Manhattan posted a 25-20 win in set three to extend the contest. Canisius led the fourth set 19-17 before Nelson put down back-to-back kills to stretch the Blue and Gold's lead to four points at 21-17, and then Canisius closed out the contest by scoring four of the match's final five points, including back-to-back kills by freshman Emma Mans down the stretch.

Kinney recorded a match-high 16 kills in the win for Canisius, which has now won two straight and six of its nine matches, dating back to Oct. 2. Nelson posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs to go with a season-high six service aces and senior Ashley Kekeisen added a career-high eight kills, 11 digs, nine assists, an ace and a block assist to the winning cause.

Senior setter Callie Chamulak was good for a career-high 27 assists in the win, and she also posted nine digs and two kills for the Griffs, while senior libero Joli Ruby recorded a career best 18 digs. For the match, Canisius hit .191 as a team and ended the day with 14 service aces, the most for the squad in a match this season.
