Novice Eight Places Fourth at Head of the Schuylkill

Canisius' novice eight placed fourth against nationally competition at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia on Saturday.

The shell finished with a 15:09.157 time, which was just over a minute behind the first-place finisher, Lehigh (13:51.763). La Salle (14:08.537) and Army (14:55.691) edged out the Griffs in the 17-team field, finishing under a minute ahead of the Blue and Gold.

Macey Schneider served as the coxswain, while Hannah Kenefick, Skylar Vles, Eliza Hanson, Gabrielle Guzinski, Cece Reiser, Maddie Nowicki, Brianna Shaw and Sami Trolli were the eight rowers.

In the Griffs' first event of the day, Canisius sent a pair of varsity four shells out for the Women's Championship Fours event.

The "A" boat, which featured Ava Horgan at coxswain and rowers Allyson Matrassi, Isabella Bruno, Destiny Severn and Bridget Reilly, finished with a time of 14:46.676, good for 10th place. The "B" shell finished 17th out of the 40 participants who raced, ending with a time of 15:09.870. Lehigh also claimed first place in this event, crossing the finish line in 13:47.584.

Canisius' last participant at the regatta came in the Women's Club Championship Eight event. The Griffs finished 37th with a time of 15:41.399, while Temple finished nearly three minutes earlier in 12:41.297.

"I'm pleased with today's results. We came in with a goal of being top-10 in the Champ 4+ and we accomplished that. Additionally, the 2v4 worked very hard to close the gap from last weekend and they executed that plan very well."

"The novice eight came out and crushed it today. Coach Matt Cosmann has worked really hard with our walk-ons to get us to this point in less than two months on the water.

"Overall, we have some really great takeaways that we will bring with us into winter training."
