Hockey Doubled Up by Ferris State in Series Finale

Liam McDougall scored two goals, including the game winner, to pace Ferris State in a 4-2 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's hockey action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Bradley Marek and Dallas Tulik also found the back of the net for the Bulldogs (3-5-0), who salvaged a split of the non-conference series with Saturday's victory. Roni Salmenkangas finished with 23 saves between the pipes for Ferris State.

Graduate students Joey Matthews and Austin Alger accounted for the two goals for the Golden Griffins (3-3-1). Junior goaltender Jacob Barczewski recorded 16 saves.

McDougall opened the scoring just before the seven-minute mark of the first period, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with an assist from Justin Michaelian to give the Bulldogs the lead.

Matthews tied the game with a little more than four minutes remaining in the opening frame with a power-play goal. His shot from the top of the point deflected off the stick of a Ferris State defender in the middle of the slot and found its way past Salmenkangas.

Marek restored the Bulldogs lead at the 13:14 mark of the second period with a power-play goal, beating Barczewski from close range to put Ferris State back in front, 2-1.

Alger brought the Griffs level with a power-play goal just 34 seconds into the third period, putting home senior Mitchell Martan's pass from off the left post to make it a 2-2 contest.

McDougall put the Bulldogs back in front, 3-2, with 6:50 elapsed in the third when he wired a wrist shot over the glove of Barczewski from the middle of the slot.

Tulik added an empty-net goal with 1:08 to play to determine the final margin.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"The first thing is I'm very hopeful that Jake Transit is okay. It sounds like a good report from what we've been told. I know no player wants to leave the ice in that manner. So, first and foremost, we're thinking about Jake and his family and hopefully he's okay.

The game was filled with lots of pauses and adversity with multiple five-minute majors. It was not a very disciplined hockey game, and that's something that we talk about a lot. We have to be better there. Overall, just not good enough to get the result that we were going for tonight. But we lean into it. We let it sting and we go back to work on Monday.

"The delays are just it's just part of it. Right? I mean, that's not a normal hockey game in terms of the numbers of delays but you just label it adversity and handle it and move on. We're trying to prepare every player on our team to whatever the adversity is of a game to respond. There was lots of events that happened tonight. Our response was okay, We were pushing. Our power play didn't get it done for us late and that was disappointing. We probably needed another save and maybe a little more time and a little better push. But adversity is something that just exists in every game. Tonight was just a different kind of hockey game that way.

"I honestly didn't feel that on the bench. I know when you look at a box score and you see the five-minute majors, that's something that you don't want to see in any game. But I didn't feel like it was a supercharged emotional game. There was a little bit around the goalies, but I categorize that as very normal.  I haven't looked at the video yet, but there were some high hits that just added to the emotion of the game. But overall, it was two teams that were trying to find a way to win and I didn't feel that it got out of control by any means. It was a hockey game that both teams were trying to handle the pauses and find their game and credit to them because they were better than us and won the game."
