Hockey Edged by Bentley in League Opener

Bentley used a pair of late first-period goals to defeat Canisius, 2-1, in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Cooper Connell and Matt Lombardozzi scored just over three minutes apart the later stages of the opening frame to provide all the scoring the host Falcons (4-4-0, 2-1-0 AHA) would need as goaltender Jason Grande stopped 18-of-19 shots he faced to earn his first collegiate win.

Junior goaltender Jacob Barczewski kept the Golden Griffins (3-4-1, 0-1-0 AHA) in the game, making a career-high 40 saves as Bentley out-shot Canisius, 42-19.  Senior J.D. Pogue accounted for the lone Griffs goal, finding the back of the net in the final minute of the second period.

Connell opened the scoring at the 16:07 mark of the first as he finished off an odd-man rush with a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Barczewski.

Lombardozzi doubled the Falcons advantage in the final minute of the opening frame with a power-play goal, firing a slap shot from the point that deflected off a Canisius defender and into the Canisius net.

Pogue got Canisius on the board in the final minute of the second period, redirecting a wrist shot from sophomore Max Kouznetsov past Grande during a zone entry to make it a 2-1 contest.

The Griffs had three power-play opportunities to attempt to tie the game in the third, including a double-minor scenario early in the frame. But, they were unable to net the equalizer, allowing the Falcons to record the one-goal victory.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"I hoping that everybody wearing Blue and Gold tonight looks at each other and realizes that our effort this evening was not even close. Sometimes it's good to get your butt kicked by an opponent. This feels like one of those moments.

"It was a lack of the three areas that we talk about all the time. Lack of compete. We got out-competed by the opponent. Lack of discipline. Destroying our team in terms of trying to get into a game when you're down, then having to kill penalties and having guys get too much ice time and some guys get none because of special teams play. Lastly, it was a lack of commitment to playing our system. Those three areas are our three check marks that we try to get every period and we didn't get one all game. So, credit to Bentley, they out-worked us, had more discipline than we did and played a better system. With that recipe nobody stands a chance.

"Barzo (Jacob Barczewski) was the lone bright spot tonight. Two early goals got us behind, but Jacob Barczewski gave us a chance to win a game. It's 2-1 going into the third period because of him. Barczewski was a rock star tonight. He was unbelievable. He battled. He had huge saves. He had simple saves. He had multiple saves when we weren't committed around our net. He was the only bright spot of our team tonight."
