Volleyball Cruises to Sweep of Manhattan

The Canisius volleyball team hit .327 as a team for the match and freshman Kara Zaucha pounded down a match-15 kills as the Golden Griffins went on the road and swept Manhattan 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y.

Canisius won the sets by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-17. The victory moves the Griffs to 4-11 overall and 4-2 in MAAC action, while Manhattan fell to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in MAAC play.

MATCH RECAP
After Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match with the 25-22 victory in the opening set, Zaucha pushed the Griffs to a 2-0 lead in the match after she collected seven kills in the second set, alone. In the third set, the Jaspers cut the Canisius lead to 16-14 midway through the set before the Blue and Gold scored nine of the final 12 points in the frame. In that scoring spurt, Canisius freshman Emma Mans had a pair of kills and the Griffs took advantage of three Manhattan attack errors to go with a ball-handling error and a service reception error.

Zaucha's 15 kills are the most for her in her first season on Main Street. She also added three block assists and a dig to the winning effort as well. Junior Ella Loussia was good for 13 kills and four digs, while Mans added seven kills to the Griffs' effort as well.

Senior setter Ashley Kekeisen fueled the Griffs' offense with 24 assists on the day, while junior libero Bree Long was good for 10 digs. In all, Canisius was credited with two solo blocks and 12 block assists, with junior Camille Vanleer recording a team-best three in the victory.

MATCH NOTES
• Canisius leads the all-time series with Manhattan 32-17. The Griffs have taken the last meetings between the two programs, dating back to 2017.
• The Griffs' 3-0 sweep on Sunday is the team's first of the season, and it marks the first time the Blue and Gold have recorded a 3-0 in a MAAC regular season match since March 21, 2020 when Canisius swept Iona at home.
• Zaucha's 15 kills on the day are the most for a Canisius freshman since Loussia had 19 kills in a win over Fairfield Nov. 16, 2019.
