Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Rallies Late to Beat Ferris State

Canisius scored twice in a 2:53 span late in the third period to rally from a one-goal deficit and defeat Ferris State, 4-3, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Senior Mitchell Martan tallied the game-tying goal at the 13:09 mark of the third before graduate student Jake Witkowski notched the game-winning goal with less than four minutes remaining to lift the Golden Griffins (3-2-1) to a victory in their home debut.

Sophomore Max Kouznetsov and graduate student Cory Thomas also scored for Canisius while junior goaltender Jacob Barczewski made 25 saves between the pipes for the Blue and Gold.

Bradley Marek, Justin Michaelian and Zach Faremouth tallied the three goals for the Bulldogs (2-5-0). Logan Stein finished with 38 saves for the visitors.

Trailing 3-2 with less than seven minutes remaining, Martan drew the Griffs level with his first of the campaign, jamming home a loose puck in the final seconds of a power-play opportunity to make it a 3-3 game.

Witkowski put the Griffs in front less than three minutes later, collecting a pass from junior Simon Gravel in the slot and firing a shot between the legs of Stein to give the Griffs a 4-3 lead.

Ferris State pulled Stein in the final two minutes pressing for the equalizer, but Barczewski and the Canisius defense were up to the challenge, keeping the Bulldogs off the board to preserve the one-goal lead and secure the victory.

Earlier in the contest, Kouznetsov staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead just 64 seconds in when he deflected senior Alex Ambrosio's shot between the legs of Stein for his second of the campaign.

Marek brought the Bulldogs level less than two minutes later, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with an assist from Sam Skinner to knot the score at 1-1.

Michaelian gave Ferris State a 2-1 lead at the 5:50 mark of the first period with a shorthanded tally, beating Barczewski with a wrist shot from the middle of the slot that rang off the left post and went in.

Thomas tied the game at 2-2 less than three minutes into the second period, blasting a slap shot from the top of the left point that beat Stein over the glove.

Faremouth put Ferris in front at the 3:28 mark of the third with his first collegiate tally, collecting a loose puck at the top of the zone and firing a wrist shot over the glove of Barczewski, setting the stage for the Griffs third-period comeback.
Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It was a tough hockey game. It took everybody tonight. You look at who's scored for us, it's all down the lineup. You look back in the game and you can see big plays by everybody, from Ryan Miotto winning a big face off at the end to (Jacob) Barczewski making some big saves when we needed them. Obviously, (Jake) Witkowski getting a huge goal for us, scoring the game-winning goal. That's two games in a row for him, we're happy to see that. Our power play got us a lot of momentum, our top line was really good, the middle of our lineup was really good. It really took a team effort to get a tough home win tonight.

"Tonight, was a memorable game for me personally. When you're playing any opponent, you try to limit distractions. But this one for me, it was a very good distraction. It felt great honestly, seeing the Ferris State jersey again. I'm a proud alum. I'm a bulldog. I'm also a Griff. So, this game, it was truly a memorable moment for me and my family.

"You could you could see it. They were stretching us out. They are a good breakout team; they would send pucks into the neutral zone and it does put pressure on our third forward and our defenseman to make sure that they're making the right decisions. Are we holding the blue line? Are we back with numbers? Early in the game they took advantage of it. It was odd-man rush after odd-man rush for a little bit of the first period. Our guys understood and handled some coaching going into the second to realize that that's inexcusable, that we needed more effort and more intelligent plays from everybody on the ice in Blue and Gold. As the game went on, we handled it better."
