Volleyball Rallies to Defeat League-Leading Fairfield in Five Sets

Junior outside hitter Ella Loussia recorded a career-high 22 kills to pace Canisius in a 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-27, 25-23, 16-14) come-from-behind victory at league-leading Fairfield Sunday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action at the RecPlex in Fairfield, Conn.
 
Loussia led three Golden Griffin (7-14, 7-5 MAAC) players in double-digit kills as seniors Camilla Vazquez and Hannah Nelson pitched in 13 kills each.
 
Vazquez and Nelson were also a key part of a Canisius defense that posted a season-high 17 total blocks as Vazquez led all players with nine block assists while Nelson and junior Elle Shult pitched in seven block assists each.
 
Senior Ashley Kekeisen dished out a career-best 54 assists while junior Bree Long tallied a match-best 23 digs and Nelson added a season-high 19 digs as she finished just shy of a triple-double.
 
Laura Seeger led four Stags (17-7, 12-1 MAAC) players with double-figure kills as she was joined by Mikayla Haut (14), Luci Albertson (11) and Emily Schillinger (10). Manuela Nicolini recorded a match-high 55 assists for Fairfield while Haut and Georgia Via tallied 22 digs apiece.  
 
Down 23-22 late in the first set, a service error by Fairfield sparked the Griffs to score three unanswered points, punctuated by a kill on set point from Nelson, as it rallied to post 25-23 victory and take a 1-0 lead.
 
Set two saw the teams trade points through a majority of the frame until, with the score knotted at 19-all, a kill by Fairfield sparked a 6-1 run that lasted until the end of the set to give the Stags a 25-20 victory and even the match at 1-1.
 
Canisius used a 5-1 run to build a 7-3 advantage early in the third set, but Fairfield responded with a 7-0 spurt of its own midway through the frame to take the lead, 16-14. The teams then proceeded to trade points, until, with the scored deadlocked at 25-all, a kill and a service error propelled the Stags to a 27-25 victory and a 2-1 match lead.
 
Trialing 19-16 late in the fourth set, Canisius rattled off four unanswered points take the lead, part of a 9-4 run that closed out the frame and gave the Griffs a 25-23 victory, forcing a fifth and decisive set.
 
Fairfield held an 11-6 lead in the later stages of the fifth set before a kill by Nelson sparked the Griffs to score seven of the next nine points to tie the match at 13-all. The Stags briefly regained the lead on a kill by Seeger, but Canisius answered back with three straight points to post a 16-14 victory and take the match.
 
Game Notes
• Sunday's match served as the 49th meeting between Canisius and Fairfield. The Stags lead the series, 33-16, but the Griffs earned their fourth win in their last six matches against the Stags with Sunday's triumph.
• Canisius posted a .162 hitting percentage (63-31-198) for the match while Fairfield turned in a .178 (63-31-180) attack clip.
• The 17 total blocks by the Griffs on Sunday established a season high. It also marked the fifth time this season that Canisius has recorded double-digit blocks in a match.
• Canisius played its fifth five-set match of the season on Sunday. The Griffs improved to 4-1 in those matches with Sunday's victory.
• Loussia has posted double-digit kills in nine consecutive matches. The 22 kills eclipsed her previous personal best of 21, set on two prior occasions.
 
Up Next
Canisius will return to Buffalo, N.Y., for its final three home matches of the fall campaign. The Griffs host Manhattan Oct. 30 before playing Iona on Halloween, with both matches slated to begin at noon from the Koessler Athletic Center. Prior to the contest against Manhattan, Canisius will celebrate Senior Day, honoring the Class of 2022.

The Blue and Gold will have its final home match of the season on Nov. 4, when the team plays host to Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara at 6 p.m.
