Volleyball Comes Up Short at Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac's Georgia Tselepi posted a team-high 13 kills, while teammate Nicole Legg was good for nine kills and three services aces in the Bobcats' 3-1 win over Canisius in MAAC volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.
 
The win moves Quinnipiac to 7-14 overall and 6-6 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 6-14 overall and 6-5 in league action with their second-straight loss.
 
MATCH RECAP
The host Bobcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match after taking the first set by the score of 25-22 and then the second set by a score of 25-19. Out of the intermission, Canisius cut Quinnipiac's lead in half at 2-1 thanks to a 25-22 set victory, which was fueled by the efforts of senior Hannah Nelson and junior Elle Shult.
 
In the third frame, Nelson was credited with five of her nine kills on the day, while Shult added two kills, two block assists and a service ace on set-point to give the Blue and Gold the victory, extending the match.

With the fourth set tied at 18-18, the host Bobcats scored five of the contest's next six points to take a 23-19 lead, capped by a service ace by Legg. A kill by Canisius' Rachel Kinney held off match-point for a moment, but Quinnipiac scored the set's next point thanks to a kill from Lexi Morse to seal the 25-21 win for the home team.
 
Junior Ella Loussia led the way for the Griffs with a match-high 14 kills, as the Blue and Gold hit just .185 as a team for the day. Loussia also added eight digs, four block assists and two aces in the losing effort. Nelson added 12 digs and a pair of block assists to her nine kills, while Kinney was good for eight kills and six digs. Senior Camila Vazquez posted seven kills, two solo blocks and six blocks assists to Canisius' effort, as the Griffs closed out the contest with 24 total blocks (six solo, 18 assists) for the match.
 
Senior setter Ashley Kekeisen was credited with a team-high 29 assists with 16 digs for Canisius, while junior libero Bree Long chipped in 18 digs and four assists.
 
GAME NOTES
• Quinnipiac swept the regular-season series from Canisius with the win on Saturday, the Bobcats' first sweep of the Griffs in MAAC play since 2016.
• Loussia now has 10-plus kills in eight-straight matches. Her five total blocks on Saturday are a season high.
• Nelson is averaging 2.57 kills per set in the team's last four outings. Her 12 digs on Saturday marked the first time this season she's recorded double-digit digs in a match.
• Kekeisen has recorded double-figure digs in six matches this year after recording 16 on Saturday.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius will close out its two-match road swing through the state of Connecticut on Sunday when the team plays at MAAC-leading Fairfield. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
