Rowing Earns Four First-Place Finishes in Opening Fall Event

The Canisius women's rowing team had a successful opening to its fall slate Sunday on the Black Rock Canal, claiming first place in all four events it ran at the Head of the Niagara Regatta, hosted by the West Side Rowing Club.

In the regatta's morning session, Canisius took first and second place in the Collegiate 4+ race. The Griffs' "A" team crossed the finish line first (12:19.00) and the "B" boat crossed the line just over a minute later (13:22.26). D'Youville, Buffalo State and Buffalo rounded out the five-team race.

The final event that the Griffs participated in during the morning session also went in the Blue and Gold's favor, as the Novice 4+ placed first, completing the race in 13:54.96, two minutes faster than D'Youville (16:17.01) and just over six minutes quicker than Buffalo State's shell (20:05:65).

Canisius opened the afternoon session with a first-place finish, ousting the only other participant, Buffalo, in the Collegiate 8+ race, concluding the distance in 11:11.10. The Bulls finished just under a minute and a half after the Griffs (12:40.97).

In the day's final event, Canisius finished the Novice 8+ race in 13:12.88, just over two minutes faster than Buffalo (15:18.93).

Coxswain Macey Schneider and rowers Eliza Hanson, Hannah Kenefick, Allyson Matrassi, Bridget Reilly, Destiny Severn, Sami Trolli and Skylar Vles were all two-event winners on Sunday.

EVENT NOTES
• Canisius, with its four first-place finishes Sunday, has now earned at least one first-place finish in its last five appearances at the Head of the Niagara Regatta.
• The four first-place finishes are the first time the Griffs have posted at least a quartet of wins in a single day since last April against Colgate.
• The Varsity Four "A" time of 12:19.00 is the fastest finish on record for a Canisius four-person shell in Head of the Niagara history. The previous fastest time was 13:33.26, set in 2018.
• Canisius' Varsity Eight also established its fastest finish on record for a varsity eight shell at the Head of the Niagara Regatta, besting an 11:25.19 time in 2018.

UP NEXT
