Quinnipiac Holds On to Defeat Women's Basketball

Game Recap
Quinnipiac, led by Shaq Edwards and Paige Warfel, outlasted Canisius (5-24, 4-16 MAAC), 63-57, Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Edwards finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting, including 6-for-11 from 3-point range. Warfel collected 19 rebounds in the winning effort to go with 15 points, four assists, five steals and a block. Quinnipiac (15-14, 12-8 MAAC) shot just 33.3 percent from the field, including 26.9 percent from 3-point range. The Bobcats dominated the glass, collecting 43 rebounds, 20 of which came on the offensive end, resulting in 18 second-chance points.

Junior Danielle Sanderlin and redshirt-senior AJ Timbers each registered 18 points and 8 rebounds in the contest. Senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks added 10 points and three assists in 40 minutes of action. The Golden Griffins shot 42.0 percent from the floor, including 35.3 percent from the perimeter.

With 4:06 remaining in the first quarter, Canisius took a seven-point lead after Timbers connected on a 3-pointer while being fouled, completing the four-point play at the line to make the score, 11-4, in favor of the Griffs. Quinnipiac would quickly work their way back into the contest as it used a 13-0 outburst to take a 17-11 advantage over Canisius with 40 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Patterson-Ricks would finish the quarter with a layup to put Canisius down 17-13 at the end of one.

In the second quarter, the Bobcats would take a 29-22 lead over Canisius with 2:03 left in the first half, before the Griffs outscored Quinnipiac 6-1 in the final two minutes to go into the locker rooms down just two, 30-28.

After Jaden Ward went 1-for-2 at the charity stripe in the opening 30 seconds of the third quarter, Canisius sparked a quick 6-0 run to retake the lead, 34-31. The lead wouldn't last long for the Griffs as Edwards hit a 3-pointer straight on to tie the game at 34-all on the very next possession. Quinnipiac would build a six-point lead by the end of the frame, 47-41.

By the 4:27 mark of the fourth and final quarter, Quinnipiac had built its lead to nine, 47-56. The Griffs would make it interesting down the stretch as they pulled within four points twice, the final time coming after a Timbers made three-ball with 1:29 remaining. The Bobcats would put the game away at the line, going four for its final four from the charity stripe to determine the final margin.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"At the end of the day, what Paige Warfel did to us on the offensive boards was ultimately the big difference. I thought our defense was certainly better than our last game and I even thought it was even better than the first time we played them at their place and we almost beat them at their place, however, you have to finish those possessions and we, unfortunately, did not today."

Game Notes
• Quinnipiac improves to 16-0 over Canisius.
• For Timbers, it was the third time she has led Canisius in scoring this season, while it marked Sanderlin's 12th time leading the team in points.
• Timbers has a 3-point field goal percentage of 44.9 percent, which currently ranks second in the Canisius women's basketball single-season record book.
