Women’s Basketball Sees Season End With Loss to Siena

Game Recap
Siena junior guard Rayshel Brown scored 20 points to go with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals and teammate Sabrina Piper scored 16 points and grabbed nine boards as the No. 6 seed Saints came back from as many as 13-points down to defeat Canisius 58-48 in the opening round of the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Women's Basketball Championship in Atlantic City, N.J.

The win allows Siena (11-19) to advance to the tournament's quarterfinal round where the team will meet No. 3 seed Fairfield on Thursday, while the Golden Griffins see their 2019-20 season end with an overall record of 5-25.

For Canisius, senior AJ Timbers recorded her first career double-double in her final collegiate game after she scored 16 points to go with 11 rebounds. Fellow senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks also scored 16 points to go with six assists and a career-high six steals.

Canisius got out of the gate fast, and led by as many as 13-points at 23-10 with 8:08 left before halftime after Timbers took the feed from fellow senior Shannon Conely and scored one off the glass. The Griffs' took a 10-point lead into the locker room at the halftime intermission after the Blue and Gold shot 44.8 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from 3-point land while holding a 23-19 advantage on the glass.

In the second half, Siena extended its full-court pressure in an effort to whittle away at the Griffs' lead. A driving bucket by junior Danielle Sanderlin put Canisius up 41-34 with 3:23 left in the third stanza, but Siena closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 44-41 lead into the game's final 10 minutes.

A 3-point field goal by Patterson-Ricks with 9:17 left in the game tied the contest at 44-44, but that field goal would end up being Canisius' final bucket until the games closing seconds, as the Saints outscored the Griffs 14-7 in the fourth quarter the seal the victory. After shooting nearly 45 percent from the floor in the game's opening 20 minutes, the Blue and Gold struggled after halftime, shooting just 18.2 percent from the field while turning the ball over seven times.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"I'm very proud of them today. They came out, they did not hide from being the 11th seed. They came out and took the underdog mentality and we were the first team to punch. I certainly give them a lot of credit for that. That's not always easy to do."
"Many of our players have logged some pretty heavy minutes. We have been a little low on the rotation down the stretch and they were tired. But they came out, they played strong, they stuck to the game plan and we got some nice breaks out of the gate, got a good jump out of the gate and we felt pretty good about ourselves. But I do think at the end of the day, fatigue played a big part of it."

"At the end of the day, going into next year, the one thing that we have to prioritize is being more consistent with habits that will lead to success. It has to be a focus of ours moving forward in order to bring in a new nucleus and put them in a position to have more consistent success than what we had this year."
