Hockey Falls in Game one of AHA Series at Bentley

Senior Nick Hutchison scored his team-leading 17th goal of the season, but Bentley used a balanced attack to post a 6-1 victory over Canisius in game one of their Atlantic Hockey Tournament first round series Friday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Brendan Walkom tallied two goals and Jonathan Desbiens dished out three assists to pace a Falcons' (16-16-3) offense that saw 11 different players record at least one point as they took the lead in the best-of-three series with Friday's victory.

Charlie Marchand staked the Falcons to an early lead, opening the scoring a little more than eight minutes into the contest when his shot from the right point found its way through traffic and into the Canisius goal.

Ryner Gorowsky doubled the Bentley margin at the 14:31 mark of the first, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.

The Falcons added to their lead with three goals in the middle frame to build a 5-0 cushion. Connor Brassard began the Bentley barrage just past the six-minute mark of the second, beating Barczewski with a wrist shot to the blocker side during a 3-on-1 break.

The Falcons increased their lead with a pair of goals just 39 seconds apart near the midway point of the frame, as Brett Orr scored on a point shot with 11:43 elapsed before Walkom redirected a feed from Lucas Vanroboys past Barcezewski from close range on the next shift.

Hutchison got Canisius on the board at the 5:23 mark of the third, beating Bentley goaltender Aidan Pelino with a backhanded effort to the blocker side from the middle of the slot to make it a 5-1 contest.

Walkom closed out the scoring just before the midway point of the third, beating Griffs sophomore netminder Matt Ladd with a wrist shot from the slot for his second of the evening.

Freshman Jacob Barczewski got the start in goal for the Golden Griffins (10-19-6), making 15 saves before being replaced in the second by Ladd, who stopped nine shots in relief.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"We were out-worked, out-classed and out-played tonight. It was an introduction to the playoffs for a lot of guys on our team that haven't played in the playoffs and we're playing against a really good, older team at home and we didn't have a response for them at all tonight. So, need to be much better, obviously, much better up and down our lineup to get a win tomorrow. That's our focus.

"It's tough to say we weren't ready because I really liked our prep coming into the weekend. It's just, there's an opponent, and our guys need to understand that everybody works hard.  It's a prerequisite. It doesn't mean we were unprepared, we just got out-worked. Especially in the playoffs, you're going to have to have a better effort. It requires everybody. They had contributions from their entire lineup except their top line, and you're not going to lose those games often when that happens. We didn't have everybody ready to compete at Bentley's level tonight. We had some moments where we were playing better, but it just became too much, and they kept coming and we didn't have enough of an answer. So, you quickly get refocused, because we're going to need everybody tomorrow."
