Hockey Sees Season End at Bentley on Late Goal

Jonathan Desbiens scored a power-play goal with 1:26 remaining in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and propel No. 9 seed Bentley to a 5-3 victory over No. 8 seed Canisius in game two of their Atlantic Hockey Tournament first-round series Saturday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Ryner Gorowsky recorded a hat trick and Matt Lombardozzi added an individual tally for the Falcons (17-16-3), who advanced to the quarterfinals with their sweep of the best-of-three series. The Falcons' opponent for the next round will be determined at the conclusion of this weekend's first-round contests.

Sophomore Lee Lapid and seniors Matt Hoover and Nick Hutchison accounted for the three goals for the Golden Griffins (10-20-6), who saw their season end with Saturday's setback.

Desbiens netted the series-clinching goal in the final two minutes of regulation, putting home a rebound from the bottom of the right faceoff circle after Matt Gosiewski's initial attempt ricocheted off the end boards right to Desbiens.

Gorowsky completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal with 47 seconds remaining to determine the final margin.

Earlier in the contest, Bentley jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, taking advantage of a pair of special-team goals midway through the first.

Lombardozzi opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 9:28 mark of the opening frame, firing home a loose puck past the blocker of Canisius goaltender Jacob Barczewski from the middle of the slot.

Gorowsky doubled the Falcons advantage less than two minutes later, converting on a shorthanded breakaway to make it a two-goal lead for the hosts.

Lapid got the Griffs on the board at the 7:29 mark of the second, redirecting Hutchison's centering feed past Bentley goaltender Aidan Pelino for his 11th of the season.

Hoover tied the game at 2-2 just under five minutes later, collecting a Hutchison zone-entry pass off the left side wall and beating Pelino with a shot to the blocker side for his 15th of the season.

Gorowsky restored the Falcons lead in the final seconds of the second, chipping his own rebound over Barczewski and under the crossbar from just off the left post to make it a 3-2 contest.

Hutchison brought Canisius level for the second time in the contest a little more than three minutes into the third, depositing Grant Meyer's feed from below the goal line past an unsuspecting Pelino to make it a 3-3 game, setting the stage for Desbiens' game-winning goal.

Barczewski made 26 saves for Canisius while Pelino turned aside 27 shot between the pipes for Bentley.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"Nothing about tonight's game. Today is about people and specifically our seniors. All of my thoughts and every emotion that I have is with them. On days like this, it really has nothing to do with the game, it's about Hutch (Nick Hutchison), Hoov (Matt Hoover), Stiefer (Matt Stief) Urbs (Daniel Urbani), Casey (Jerry), JP (Jesse Pereira) and Will Scherer. That's where all my thoughts go. So tonight, it's all about them and I'm proud of all of them. I love all of them. Those are that's all my thoughts on today's game."
