Softball Throws No-Hitter, Splits on Day Two of Gardner-Webb Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Picking up the program's first no-hitter in 11 years, the Canisius softball team earned a split on the second day of the Gardner-Webb University Tournament by no-hitting Maryland Eastern Shore, 8-0, in five innings before falling to host Gardner-Webb, 13-2, in another five-inning affair.

The Golden Griffins shifted to 2-2 on the season while Maryland Eastern Shore fell to 0-4 and the Runnin' Bulldogs moved to 2-2.

GAME 1
Juniors Kara Paradowski and Erin Hufford each went 2-for-3 to start the day, with Paradowski legging out a triple and Hufford also swiping two bases. Redshirt senior Lauren Castro, junior Lindsi Dennis and freshman Teagan Rice each had a hit for the Griffs as well.

Sophomore Hayley Tamaro earned the start for the Griffs, walking three batters and striking out one over an inning of work. Freshman Sarah Cantley then took over for Canisius, going four perfrect innings and striking out four hitters. Both pitchers combined for the first no-hitter by the Blue and Gold since Mallory Aldred threw five no-hit innings in a 8-0 victory over Youngstown State on March 27, 2009. It was also the first combined no-hitter by Canisius pitchers since a 2-0 win over Southern Utah on March 11, 2007, when Courtney Piar and Juliette Bowers combined to keep the Thunderbirds hitless over seven frames.

GAME 2
Despite an early 2-0 lead in the first off of a RBI double by Castro and a sacrifice fly by senior Gianna Degaltini, a two-run homer by Gardner-Webb's Autumn Owen led to 13 unanswered runs, including a grand slam by Brooke Perry to make it 13-2 in favor of the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Canisius earned nine hits in game two, led by Hufford's 3-for-3 performance at the plate, as well as Paradowski and Castro both going a perfect 2-for-2 in the contest. Additional hits came from Rice and senior Morgan Altman.

Emily Nicosia took the loss for the Griffs, going 3.1 innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits. Castro took over in the fourth, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning of relief, before redshirt sophomore Shealyn Ollison came in for Castro, allowing four runs on three hits.

UP NEXT
Canisius will close out the Gardner-Webb University Tournament with a rematch against Youngstown State at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
