Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Outlasts Fairfield, 70-63

Game Recap
On a day where the Golden Griffins welcomed back women's basketball alumni and honored the All-Sesquicentennial Team, Canisius was able to come out on top, 70-63, over the visiting Fairfield Stags in MAAC women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Blue and Gold were led by junior Danielle Sanderlin who finished the game with 20 points on 9-for-16 shooting, while also collecting seven rebounds. Senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks went 5-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-7 from 3-point range for a total of 19 points. AJ Timbers poured in 17 of her own, followed by senior Shannon Conely who recorded 10 points off the bench. The Griffs went 25-for-50 from the field, including 7-for-15 from behind the arc. Canisius missed just one attempt at the line, going 13-for-14 for the game.

The Golden Griffins won the rebound battle, 31-30.

Lou Lopez-Senechal and Katie Armstrong each recorded 22 points for Fairfield (14-5, 8-3 MAAC), shooting a combined 54.5 percent from the floor. Lopez-Senechal grabbed 11 caroms in the loss to record the double-double. The Stags completed the contest with a 40.3 percent clip from the floor and just a 28.6 percent mark from downtown.

Fairfield went on a 12-0 run in the first quarter to build a 17-9 advantage after the first 10-minutes of action. However, in the second quarter of play, Canisius' offense got into a rhythm erasing that eight-point Stags lead in 4:23 of action as Patterson-Ricks intercepted a pass and took it the distance for the game-tying layup.

The Griffs would relinquish its lead with two minutes remaining in the second stanza, 25-24, but Patterson-Ricks immediately put Canisius back on top with a deep 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. Conely added two free-throws to give the Griffs a 29-25 halftime lead.

Canisius wouldn't look back as it built its lead to as much as 12-points, 56-44, following a bucket in the paint from Sanderlin who scored 12 of her team-high 20 points in the third and fourth quarters.

Fairfield made it a five-point game with 30-seconds remaining, however, the Golden Griffins were able to hold on for the 70-63 win as Patterson-Ricks sealed it with two made free throws in the final 10-seconds of regulation.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"For us, it is trying at this point to get them to buy into what we are trying to do on both ends of the floor and do it consistently, and most importantly to do it together and they are starting to do that, the last two games they've done that."

"We have talked all season long, to not measure your progress by the scoreboard, and at this point, I am happy for them, because, today they can walk in the locker room and feel good about the scoreboard."
