Women's Basketball Bested by Marist, 86-72

Four Red Foxes reached double figures as Marist defeated Canisius, 86-72, Thursday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action from McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Marist (19-4, 12-2 MAAC) was led by Alana Gilmer who finished with a game-high 20 points and six rebounds, followed by Rebekah Hand who poured in 18 points and dished out seven assists. Grace Vander Weide also had seven helpers to go with 14 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Sarah Barcello added 10 points in the win. Willow Duffel recorded a game-high nine rebounds. As a team, Marist shot 58.1 percent from the floor, including 31.8 percent from 3-point range. The Red Foxes recorded 28 assists on the teams 36 makes. Marist won the battle on the glass, 32-26.

Canisius (3-19, 2-11 MAAC) was once again led by junior Danielle Sanderlin who picked up 19 points and five rebounds in the loss. Redshirt-senior AJ Timbers and teammate Anna Sweny contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively. Timbers also had a team-best three assists. Senior Tiana Pugh grabbed eight caroms off the bench to go with eight points in 21 minutes of action. For the game, the Golden Griffins went 26-for-56 from the floor, including 12-for-26 from the perimeter. Canisius went to the line 10 times, making eight. 

Marist had a 16-9 lead early in the first quarter but the Blue and Gold went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 16-all. The quarter would end with four unanswered points by the Red Foxes, making the score, 20-16, after 10-minutes of action.  

An 14-2 spurt by Marist to start the second quarter gave the Red Foxes a 30-18 lead with less than 15 minutes gone in the contest. Patterson-Ricks would make it a single-digit game and put an end to the Marist run with a 3-pointer from the elbow. That put just a brief halt to the Marist attack as the Red Foxes would respond with another run to bring their lead back to double-digits, 35-21. Despite connecting on three of its six 3-pointers in the final 6:32 of the second quarter, Canisius was outscored by the Red Foxes, 18-10, in that same span to go into the locke room down 17, 45-28.

The Golden Griffins went 5-for-8 from the perimeter in the third quarter to go blow-for-blow with the Red Foxes as each team put up 28 points in the stanza. Marist shot 66.7 percent from the field in the third to hold onto a 73-56 lead heading into the final 10-minutes of action. 

Canisius ended the game on a 9-2 run over the final 4:21, however, it was too little too late for the Blue and Gold as Marist held on for an 86-72 win at home. 

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"We got away from our offensive gameplan in the second quarter, which set us back before halftime. The reality is that we just weren't good enough on the defensive end to truly have a chance late to pull it off."

"It was certainly a better performance compared to the first time we faced Marist but still not enough."

Game Notes
• Thursday marked the 54th meeting between Canisius and Marist. The Griffs fall to 14-40 all-time against the Red Foxes. 
• For the 12th time this season, Sanderlin finished with double figures. It was also the eighth time this season the Williamstown, N.J., native led the Griffs in scoring. 
• Sanderlin, who made just two 3-pointers in her career coming into the night finished the game with three made three's, on five attempts. 
• Canisius made a season-high 12 from behind the arc, surpassing the 10 made 3-point field goals at Quinnipiac on Jan. 8.
• Sweny reached double figures for the third time this season and fourth time in her career. 
• The Blue and Gold scored 28 points in the third quarter, the most in any quarter this season.
• Timbers matched her career-high 35 minutes she set as a freshman at Towson Thursday night in Poughkeepsie.

Canisius makes the short trip down to Jersey City from Poughkeepsie to take on the Peacocks of Saint Peter's Saturday afternoon in the Yanitelli Center. The Griffs fell to Saint Peter's in the teams' first meeting by a final score of, 86-68.
