Rider Rolls Past Women's Basketball, 87-48

Stella Johnson finished with a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists to lead Rider (23-4, 16-2 MAAC) past Canisius, 87-48, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville, N.J.
 
Amari Johnson added a double-double to go with Stella Johnson's triple-double. Amari finished the game with 15 points and 11 boards. Lea Favre scored a game-high 24 points, going 12-for-17 from the field. Daija Moses added 13 points in the winning effort. Rider finished the contest shooting 56.7 percent from the field. The Broncs had 29 assists on 38 made field goals while also out-rebounding the Griffs, 35-29.
 
Junior Danielle Sanderlin recorded 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting to lead the Golden Griffins in scoring. Senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks, sophomore Shayla Sweeney and freshman Shaunae Brown each added six points in the losing effort. Senior Anna Sweny grabbed a team-high eight caroms. Canisius (5-23, 4-15 MAAC) shot 40.7 percent (22-for-54) from the field for the game. 
 
After Sanderlin connected on a turnaround jumper with 2:04 remaining in the first to tie the game, 12-12, the Broncs exploded for a 9-0 run to take a 21-12 advantage by the end of the quarter, a lead they would not relinquish. Canisius shot 41.7 in the first quarter, while Rider went 10-for-16 from the floor for a shooting percentage of 62.5 percent. 
 
Canisius pulled within four, 25-21, after Sweeney connected on a layup, however, the Broncs would use a 14-2 run over the next 5:08 to go up 39-23. The run was halted by Shannon Conely, who connected on a second chance jumper with a little over a minute remaining in the half. Rider scored on a fast break layup to end the half and take a 41-27 lead into the intermission. 
 
Rider used a 21-point third quarter to go up, 62-35. The Broncs shot 53.3 percent (8-for-15) in the frame compared to just 25.0 percent (4-for-16) for the Griffs, who scored just eight points in the frame. 
 
After nearly five minutes without a basket, Brown found her way into the lane for a layup, opening the scoring in the final quarter for Canisius. For the next 5:08 Rider would outscore Canisius 17-9, going 7-for-9 from the field to build its lead to 77-46.
 
Canisius emptied the bench in the final quarter as Rider coasted to an 87-48 win over the Blue and Gold. 
 
Game Notes
• Saturday marked the 48th meeting between Canisius and Rider. The Griffs are now xx-xx in the all-time series. 
• The 87-48 win for the Broncs is their largest victory in the series. 
• Canisius shot a season-low 5.6 percent from the perimeter and collected just one assist, the fewest in a game in over 15 seasons.
• Sanderlin led the Griffs in scoring for the 12th time this season.

Canisius will honor its senior class on Saturday, March 7, when the team plays host to Quinnipiac. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. on ESPN3. The Griffs fell to Quinnipiac on the road earlier this season by a final score of, 74-71.
