Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Blanks Mercyhurst to Complete Sweep

Canisius used goals from six different players and a combined shutout to post a 6-0 victory over Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.

Seniors Matt Hoover and Nick Hutchison, juniors Matt Long and Blake Wareham and sophomores Mitchell Martan and Lee Lapid all tallied individual markers for the Golden Griffins (10-18-6, 9-13-6-3 AHA), who closed out the regular season with a sweep of the host Lakers (5-27-2, 3-23-2-0 AHA).

That would be more than enough support for freshman Jacob Barczewski (21 saves) and sophomore Matt Ladd (10 saves), as they combined to stop all 31 shots they faced to preserve the shutout.

Martan opened the scoring just 1:12 into the contest, beating Mercyhurst goaltender Colin DeAugustine with a wrist shot to the glove side after the Griffs won a faceoff in the Lakers zone.

Lapid doubled the Canisius advantage to 2-0 with a power-play tally at the 7:27 mark of the opening frame, depositing a drop pass from junior Austin Alger inside the left post from the middle of the slot for his 10th of the campaign.

The Griffs took control of the contest in the second, tallying three goals in the opening 8:32 of the middle frame to build a 5-0 cushion.

Hoover began the second-period barrage just 39 seconds into the period, jamming home is own rebound from close range to make it a 3-0 contest.

Hutchison stretched the Griffs margin to 4-0 just before the five-minute mark of the frame with a power-play goal, putting a goalmouth feed from senior Matt Stief past DeAugustine for his 16th of the campaign.

Long closed out the second-period barrage with 8:32 elapsed in the middle frame with an even-strength tally when he put home a rebound after sophomore Kevin's Obssuth's initial attempt hit the left post.

Wareham closed out the scoring just 88 seconds into the third, beating DeAugustine to the glove side on a breakaway during 4-on-4 action.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"Anytime you can get a 6-0 victory on the road you obviously played well. Tonight, we came out early and we were able to get a 2-0 lead in the first period and we didn't look back after that. Good on our guys for showing poise and making plays and being around the net and scoring, and when we needed some big saves, the combination of (Jacob) Barczewski and (Matt) Ladd were awesome. They competed really hard, and any chances that Mercyhurst had, we had our goaltending really step up. So, we're very happy with the group and happy with the game. It's a quick celebration and then starting tomorrow, it's focused on the next season, the playoffs, they are the most important thing. So, our focus is going to be there very quickly.

"For everybody on our team, it's a little bit of a boost in confidence (to get six goals). Depth of scoring is one way that you can win playoff games. If you're getting production from everybody, it means you're scoring a lot of goals and the way we're defending lately, that's a good combo. Our power play got a couple goals. Even strength, some guys got goals that maybe haven't chipped in recently, but now, all of a sudden, it's just that boost of confidence for everybody in our team to make plays and produce.

"Momentum is something that is dangerous this time of year, it's just not a real thing. We're going to take all the lessons that we learned in the regular season, from the beginning of the year until tonight and put them all together and commit to each other this week to play the right way; to understand what it takes to win a hockey game. There's lots of ways you can win and we're going to talk about all those. That's the goal, so momentum is not real in our world. Starting tomorrow, we will prep and be prepared for anybody, anywhere, anytime."
