Women’s Basketball has Comeback Fall Short at Iona

Game Recap
A late comeback attempt by the Golden Griffins fell short as Iona was able to hold on for a 78-72 win over visiting Canisius (5-22, 4-14 MAAC) in Metro Atlantic Atheltic Conference women's basketball action at the Hynes Center in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Iona (8-16, 8-8 MAAC) was led by Juana Camillion who poured in a game-high 28 points on 8-for-16 shooting. Morgan Rachu finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, while teammate Shyan Mwai added 11 points in the winning effort. Iona went 24-for-49 from the field, including a 14-for-26 from 3-point land. The Gaels scored 22 points off 23 Canisius turnovers.

Sophomore Shayla Sweeney scored a career-high 16 points, going 11-for-12 from the line and 2-for-7 from the field. Junior Danielle Sanderlin added 16 points and a team-best seven rebounds in the loss, while teammate Shannon Conely contributed 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Canisius finished the game 42.9 percent from the floor, including 38.9 percent from the perimeter. The Griffs outrebounded Iona, 34-27.

Sanderlin scored the Blue and Gold's first six points of the contest before Canisius ended the first quarter of play on a 10-2 run that was highlighted by four points from Conely. The senior gave the Griffs an 8-7 lead when she drove baseline and finished with a layup at the 2:40 mark.

The second quarter started with a 7-2 spurt by Iona that was capped off by a jumper from Camillion that tied the game at 16 apiece. Canisius had a seven-point advantage at the halfway mark of the second quarter as Timbers connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the arc. Iona would once again work the game even, this time at 33-33 with 1:55 left in the half and eventually take the lead with 10-seconds remaining as Camillion hit a floater to make it 35-33.

Three Canisius turnovers to start the second half allowed Iona to take a 40-33 lead early on. The Gaels started the quarter of a 5-0 run before Brown made a corner three. Iona responded with a 3-pointer of its own to go up 43-36 on Canisius, forcing a Griffs' timeout.

The Gaels would finish the third shooting 60.0 percent from the perimeter which helped them take a 59-47 lead into the final quarter.

With 4:40 left in the final quarter, Canisius started a nine-unanswered run that pulled the Griffs within seven, 69-62, with just under two minutes remaining. The run was highlighted by two three-pointers, one from D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks and the other from Anna Sweny

After trading baskets down the stretch, a 3-pointer from AJ Timbers put Canisius down four, 76-72 with a little over 30 seconds remaining. However, the Gaels would make a pair at the line to seal the win and complete the season sweep of the Griffs.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"We lacked a sense of urgency on the defensive end for most of the second and third quarters. That allowed Iona to get going from the outside, which dug us into a big hole. We showed some resilience and battled a long way back to make it a two-possession game late, however, you cannot allow 14 three's and expect to win."

Game Notes
• Iona improves its all-time lead in the series to 37-27.
• Canisius was swept by Iona in the season series for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
• Sweeney's career-high 16 points came from a career-high 11 made free throws for the Pennsauken, N.J., native.
• Freshman Shaunae Brown made a career-high three 3-pointers to finish with nine points.
• For the 26th time in her career, Sanderlin registered double-digit points.
