Women’s Basketball Wins One-Point Thriller Over Monmouth

Game Recap
Senior guard D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks and junior forward Danielle Sanderlin combined for 30 points to lead Canisius (4-21, 3-13) to a one-point win over Monmouth Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action from the Koessler Athletic Center in downtown Buffalo, N.Y.

With less than 10 seconds remaining in the game and the Golden Griffins trailing, 53-52, Patterson-Ricks drove the baseline and hit a step-back jumper with 5.3 seconds left in regulation to give the Griffs the 54-53 lead. Monmouth's Sierra Green would miss a 3-pointer and Canisius would hold on for the win.

Patterson-Ricks poured in 15 points and added four assists in the win, while Sanderlin finished the game 6-for-15 and 3-for-5 from the line to pace the Canisius offense. Senior Anna Sweny added eight points and a team-high six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Freshman Shaunae Brown registered seven points in a season-high 27 minutes. The Griffs finished the game shooting 42 percent from the floor, 26.7 percent from 3-point range and 72.7 percent from the line. Canisius led for a total of 33:49 of game action.

Green finished with a game-high 20 points, going 8-for-19 from the field, including 4-for-10 from 3-point range. Akilah Jackson added 12 points and two assists, while Alexa Middleton scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Monmouth shot 33.9 percent from the floor, including a 31.3 percent mark from the perimeter. The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 45-29.

Canisius controlled the contest for the majority of the first three quarters, as it built its lead up to as much as 12 points following a 7-0 run in the third stanza that was capped off with back-to-back buckets from Brown.

Monmouth started to chip away at the Griffs lead following the third quarter media timeout. The Hawks scored nine of the frame's last 11 points to trim the Blue and Gold lead to five heading into the final period of play.

The run would continue for the visitors as they connected on their first three field goals to start the fourth, which gave Monmouth a 47-46 lead with 6:15 remaining.

Neither team would go up by more than one point in the final 6:15 as Canisius would score the game's final bucket with 5.3 on the clock to earn the win.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"I thought we had good tempo on the offensive end, I thought we did a good job taking care of the ball and not forcing the issue. When we got away from it, that was when (Monmouth) made a shot and we thought we had to answer quickly, but getting them to understand they don't have to do that with a lead is something we haven't gotten through to them yet.

"We did a good job of executing down the stretch and got out of here with a win."
