Winthrop Comes Back to Defeat Baseball in Extras

Recap
Despite holding a 5-0 lead in the eighth inning, the Canisius baseball was defeated by Winthrop, 6-5, on a walk-off single by Andrew Jenner in the 11th inning Friday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C. The Golden Griffins used multiple runs in the fourth and seventh innings to take the lead, while Eagles scored five runs across the eighth and ninth frames, as the two teams combined for nine errors in the series opener.

With the loss, the Griffs fell to 1-5 on the season, while Winthrop improved to a perfect 4-0 record in 2020.

Even though the Canisius bullpen faltered late, senior Kyle Warner tossed a career-high seven shutout innings for the Griffs, giving up six hits and no walks while also setting another career high with seven strikeouts. Fellow seniors Jake Burlingame and Jacob Victor had multi-hit days, as Burlingame opened the weekend with three singles while Victor tallied a pair of singles himself.

The game was a pitchers' duel early, as it took until the fourth inning for the Griffs to break through when redshirt-senior Canice Ejoh drove in senior Andy Leader on a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game. Redshirt-junior Gibson Krzeminski followed Ejoh by doubling and then scoring on a Jacob Victor single to make it 2-0.

In the seventh, the Blue and Gold added an insurance run when sophomore Kyle Kush hit into a fielder's choice that scored senior Burlingame. A wild pitch then allowed senior Stephen Bennett to cross home plate, while a single from Leader brought in Kush to bring the Canisius edge to 5-0.

The Eagles cut into the Canisius lead in the eighth, as an Ethan Fewell sacrifice fly and an Andrew Jenner single helped Winthrop plate two runs.

Winthrop tied the ballgame in ninth, as Tyler Baker scored on a wild pitch before Cale Gibson smashed a two-run double that evened the score at 5-5.

In the 11th, Winthrop loaded the bases with one out for Jenner, who again delivered an RBI-single to cap off the Eagles victory.

Thad Harris went 6.1 innings for the Eagles, allowing five runs (one earned) and six hits to open the game for Winthrop. Dalton Mims and Aaron White combined to keep the Griffs scoreless for 2.2 innings, while Willie Lumpkin earned the win by pitching three shutout innings in relief.

Warner made his second start of the season for Canisius, setting a career high in innings pitched for the second-consecutive game after throwing six innings against UMass Lowell last Saturday. Sophomore David Yankowski allowed two runs in the eighth and senior Jarod Burmaster surrendered three runs in the ninth, while Joe Barberio was handed the loss after going 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Game Notes
• The all-time series between the two teams moves to 4-2 in Winthrop's favor, with the Eagles winning the last three meetings.
• Burmaster and Barberio made their season debuts on the mound for the Blue and Gold this afternoon.
• Burlingame picked up his third multi-hit game in five starts, collecting three singles in five trips to the plate.
• Krzeminski extended his hitting streak to five games with his double in the fourth inning. Krzeminski has also reached base in all six games this season, totaling seven hits and eight walks.
