Game Recap: Baseball |

Winthrop Picks Up Saturday Sweep Over Baseball

The Canisius baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Winthrop on Saturday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C. The Golden Griffins could not scratch across the tying run late in a 3-2 opening loss, while the Eagles took advantage of a six-run second inning in the second game to hand Canisius a 10-2 defeat.

With the losses, the Griffs fell to 1-7 on the season, while Winthrop improved to a perfect 6-0 record in 2020.

Game One Recap
Powering the Winthrop offense was Spencer Yankle with two hits and two RBI, including a two-run double, while Canisius senior Stephen Bennett tallied two hits in the loss.

Winthrop struck first, as a walk to Andrew Jenner and back-to-back doubles from Scout McFalls and Yankle put the Eagles up 2-0 in the third inning.

The Blue and Gold chipped away at the lead in the sixth, as a single from redshirt-junior Gibson Krzeminski easily brought home senior Andy Leader from third. Winthrop responded by plating one run in the bottom of the sixth, as Tyler Baker drove in Dillon Morton on a single to take a 3-1 edge.

Senior Jacob Victor helped the Griffs again cut the Winthrop lead to one in the eighth, as Victor singled home Leader to make it 3-2 after Leader walked to start the inning. Canisius would see Bennett single to lead off the ninth, but Colten Rendon closed out the Winthrop win by retiring the next three batters for his second save of the season.

Daniel Blair picked up the win for the Eagles, allowing one unearned run on three hits over 5.1 innings. Jason Crumley gave up one run in his 2.1 innings of work, while Rendon surrendered two hits over his 1.1 innings of relief.

Sophomore Andrew Fron was handed the loss, issuing three runs on seven hits over a career-high six innings. Freshman Tom Peltier followed Fron by tossing two scoreless innings and not allowing a hit.

Game Two Recap
Highlighting the second game for Winthrop were Yankle and Gibson, as both Eagle hitters recorded two-hit, two-RBI performances in the second half of the doubleheader.

Yankle helped Winthrop take an early lead in the nightcap, as his single in the first inning plated one run and Cale Gibson followed him with another run-scoring single to make it 2-0 in the Eagles' favor.

Winthrop increased its lead to 8-0 in the second, as McFalls, Yankle and Gibson combined to notch three-straight doubles in the inning, with Joe McNamara later doubling in the frame as well.

The Griffs got on the board in the fourth, as Leader doubled to lead off and eventually scored on a Krzeminski ground-out. Winthrop quickly responded in the home half of the inning when Morton connected on a solo home run to give the Eagles an eight-run edge once again.

Matt Levenson made it 10-1 in the sixth with a bases-loaded single, while sophomore Dylan Vincent scored on a double-play ball in the seventh to shorten the lead to 10-2, but that would wrap up the scoring for either side.

Macklin Ohs earned the win, as the Winthrop right-hander tossed four innings of two-hit ball, allowing one hit while striking out three. Trevor Cumberland followed him by going two innings, giving up one hit in his outing, and Garrett Gainey closed out the game with one run in his one inning of work.

Freshman Rockne Seidel suffered the loss after starting on the mound for Canisius, being credited with six runs allowed (five earned) in 1.1 innings. Junior Jeff DeStefano came on in relief, allowing four runs in his four innings on the hill, while freshman Aaron Snyder got the final two outs for the Griffs.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Tomorrow we need to come out and put it together on both sides of the ball. We have had hitting and lacked pitching, we have had good pitching and lacked hitting. When we put a complete game together, innings one through nine, we will put ourselves in a position to get one tomorrow.

"Positives from today are that we had a good pitching performance on the mound from both Fron and Tommy Pelt, as they did a great job of keeping us in the (first) game right until the end. We also had opportunities to get guys comfortable at different positions as we use our versatility to see what lineup recipe works best moving forward."

Game Notes
• The all-time series between the two teams moves to 6-2 in Winthrop's favor, as the Eagles have won five-straight over the Griffs.
