Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Records 1-1 Tie Versus Robert Morris

Sophomore forward Kevin Obssuth scored his first goal of the season and freshman Jacob Barczewski made 25 saves to pace Canisius in a 1-1 tie against Robert Morris in Atlantic Hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter.

Darcy Walsh accounted for the lone goal for the Colonials (10-16-5, 10-10-5-3 AHA), who picked up the extra point in the league standings with a shootout goal from Aiden Beck. Reid Cooper recorded 31 saves between the pipes for Robert Morris.

Following a scoreless first, Canisius appeared to take a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the second on a shot from the right faceoff circle by sophomore Mitchell Martan, but the goal was waved off after it was determined that the Golden Griffins (8-17-6, 7-12-6-3 AHA) had too many men on the ice during the play.

Walsh finally broke the deadlock a little more than three minutes into the third, firing a loose puck from the middle of the slot that trickled through Barczewski and into the goal.

Canisius appeared to tie the game with just over five minutes remaining when Obssuth entered the RMU zone and beat Cooper with a wrist shot from the top of the slot, but for the second time in the contest, a goal was taken off the board for the Griffs as it was determined that they were offside on the play.

Obssuth finally got Canisius on the board with 3:30 remaining in regulation, finishing off a cross-ice feed from freshman David Melaragni to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team scored during 5-on-5 overtime, causing the game to be declared a tie.

After five minutes of 3-on-3 overtime, the game headed to a sudden-victory shootout. In the shootout, Canisius went first and missed, setting the stage for Beck, who beat Barczewski on the backhand to earn the extra point for the Colonials.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It took a resilient effort from us tonight. We had two goals disallowed. Those are tough, especially with one of them late in the third that tied it up. I liked the compete of our group obviously to finally tie it up with three and a half minutes left in the game. It felt like we were pushing and had good control the play tonight, we just didn't get the result we wanted. It's a shootout loss and that stings a bit. But, we have to lick our wounds and get ready to hop on the bus and prepare to face Robert Morris again tomorrow.

"We talked all week about getting around their net. I didn't feel that we did a good job of that in the first period, but we started to scratch and claw a little bit more. Credit to Robert Morris on a gritty road win for them. It felt like they blocked a lot of shots and we weren't able to get inside them enough and get around their goalie enough to really put a ton of pressure on them.  As the game went on, we started to take control of it, but still, it's a hard time of year. It's getting close to playoff time and it felt like a playoff atmosphere. It was hard, it was physical and its good preparation for both teams. We just need more. We need more scoring; we need the power play to be way better. That was the one facet of our game that I was disappointed with tonight was how the power play performed. They know it. They talked about it, and we need to correct that and that's something that needs to get way better for us. Especially in third period, we really couldn't get momentum or any anything around their net, so credit to them again, that it was a gritty road win and we have to have the same effort tomorrow."
