Last-Minute Goal Sends Robert Morris Past Hockey

Daniel Mantenuto scored a power-play goal with 52 seconds remaining in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and lift Robert Morris to a 4-3 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday at Colonials Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Mantenuto was one of four goal scorers for the host Colonials (11-16-5, 11-10-5-3 AHA) as Roman Kraemer, Michael Coyne and Luke Lynch all found the back of the net during the second period.

Junior Grant Meyer, sophomore Kevin Obssuth and freshman Ryan Miotto accounted for the the Golden Griffins' (8-18-6, 7-13-6-3 AHA) three goals.

In a back-and-forth affair, Mantenuto notched the game-winning goal during a 5-on-3 opportunity, depositing a loose puck past Canisius netminder Jacob Barczewski from just off the right post after Nick Prkusic's initial attempt from the top of the slot was turned aside.

Mantenuto's decisive tally spoiled a third-period comeback that saw Canisius score two power-play goals to tie the game.

Meyer ignited the comeback attempt at the 6:48 mark of the third, tapping home a loose puck from just off the left post in the final seconds of a power-play opportunity to make it a one-goal contest.

Miotto tied the game at 3-3 exactly six minutes later, wiring a pass from fellow freshman Keaton Mastrodonato off the crossbar and into the Robert Morris goal for his fifth of the campaign.

Canisius held a 1-0 lead after the first period as Obssuth opened the scoring with his second goal in as many contests, getting Canisius on the board at the 13:17 mark of the first period with a wraparound effort on a loose puck.

Robert Morris took a 3-1 lead with three goals in the second. Kraemer tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes into the middle frame, putting home a loose puck from the middle of the slot for his third of the campaign before the Colonials took the lead with two goals in a 38-second span midway through the frame.

Coyne began the sequence at the 10:44 mark of the second, depositing a feed from Santari Hartikainen past the blocker of Canisius keeper Jacob Barczewski to give the Colonials a 2-1 edge.

Lynch expanded the RMU advantage to two on the following shift when his shot from the top of the point found its way through traffic and into the Canisius goal, setting the stage for the game's frantic final frame.

Barczewski made 29 saves for Canisius. Kapelmaster stopped 30 shots between the pipes for RMU.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"That was a playoff-style hockey game with lots of emotion. It was a back-and-forth game.
It's not an excuse and we're not playing referee, but it has felt like every review went against us this weekend and it's a tough pill to swallow for our guys, because we're scratching and clawing and these are good preparation games for what's about to happen with Mercyhurst next weekend and then as we get into the playoff season, these are the types of games that you're going to have to win. Emotions are going to go up and we have to find, and I felt we did find, some really good focus tonight from our group as the emotions definitely rose in that game.

"When you're down 3-1 and you're on the road, it's something that's not new for our team. Not that we're down in every game, but we have a resiliency with this group that it doesn't matter whether we're up or down. But, especially when we're down, our guys tend to play really well. We earned a couple power plays. I'll say the second unit, but tonight, they were definitely our first unit. They got it done for us in some pretty key moments and gave us a chance to win a hockey game. So, we're going to need them to continue to have success and we need to get our top-line guys going on the power play. I'll say I'm disappointed in our power play tonight, but we were 2-for-5. So, we take that and move forward and get ready for a good Mercyhurst team."
