Baseball Out-Hit by West Virginia in Rainy Loss

Recap
In a game that saw a little bit of everything, Canisius lost to West Virginia, 15-8, on a rain-filled Tuesday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown, W.Va. The Golden Griffins and Mountaineers accounted for 23 total runs and 29 total hits, as the two teams showed off their offensive output, while both pitching staffs combined to allow 17 walks.

With the loss, the Griffs moved to 1-4 on the season, while WVU improved to a 3-1 in 2020.

Led by Matt McCormick's four hits and three RBI, the Mountaineers had five players tally multi-hit contests. For Canisius, redshirt-junior Gibson Krzeminski had an impressive return to Morgantown, registering two hits and three RBI to go with two walks, while redshirt-senior raked out three hits, including a double.

The Griffs got things going in the top of the first, as the former Mountaineer Krzeminski singled home Ejoh before senior Jacob Victor doubled to score Krzeminski for a 2-0 lead. West Virginia cut the lead in half the same inning, as Matt McCormick plated one run on a single.

The Mountaineers took the lead in the second, when Tyler Doanes brought in two runs before being thrown out trying to stretch out a double. McCormick then hit a solo shot later in the second to give WVU a 4-2 cushion. An Austin Davis triple and a single from Braden Zarbnisky helped West Virginia extend the edge to 6-2 in the third.

In the fifth, redshirt-sophomore Mike Steffan tripled on a ball to center field to plate fellow redshirt-sophomore Mike Mazzara. A bases-loaded walk to Victor, an infield single by sophomore Dylan Vincent and a passed ball allowed the Griffs to bring in three more runs in the inning to tie the game at 6-6. The Mountaineers did not keep it tied for long, bringing home three two-out runs to retake a 9-6 advantage.

The sixth inning saw Canisius load the bases with the first three hitters of the frame, as Krzeminski delivered a two-run single to pull Canisius within one run. Tyler DeMartino tacked on another run for WVU in the bottom of the inning with an RBI-single, while Tevin Tucker laid down a squeeze bunt that scored two more runs, extending the lead to 12-8. Three additional runs in the frame made it 15-8 in favor of West Virginia.

The game would remain 15-8 through its conclusion, despite Canisius putting runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings.

Senior Will Frank was the starting pitcher for Canisius, going one inning while allowing one run and striking out two, while West Virginia starter Tyler Strechay recorded one out while surrendering two runs. Tim Wynia got the victory for the Mountainers, issuing one unearned run in an inning of work. The loss went to Canisius freshman Tom Peltier, who was on the hook for two runs despite fanning three batters over 1.2 innings.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Overall, our offense has been doing a good job of getting on base and creating offense. We can continue to do a better job with runners in scoring position and putting more balls in play. We had the chance to get some guys going today to add to our depth for the weekend.

"On the mound we need to be better at working one pitch at a time. The process on the mound needs to be trusted and refined and we will settle in.

"Gibson had another quality day at the plate in a familiar setting where he started his college career. He has a hitter's mentality and slow heartbeat.  Mix those two things together and you have a recipe that will help you find success."

Game Notes
• The all-time series between the two teams moves to 10-5 in favor of West Virginia.
• Ejoh's three hits Tuesday matches his career high, previously doing so at St. Bonaventure on May 6, 2018.
• The two hits by Mazzara matches his career high that he set in Saturday's win over UMass Lowell.
• The 15 runs allowed by Canisius is the most since March 16 of last season, when the Griffs gave up 16 runs in a loss at Indiana.
• Canisius has recorded a triple in four of five games this season, and has had at least one double in every contest.
