Back-to-Back Homers Not Enough as Baseball Falls to UMass Lowell

Recap
In a game that saw the two squads combine for four home runs, the Canisius baseball team dropped a 14-4 contest to UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon at Ting Park in Holly Springs, N.C. The Golden Griffins and River Hawks traded runs early on before UMass Lowell struck for eight runs in the six and seventh innings to put the game away.

With the loss, the Griffs moved to 1-3 on the season, while UMass Lowell improved to 3-1 in 2020.

Freshman Keegan Calero had the big blow for the River Hawks, connecting on a three-run homer that put his team up by eight runs in the seventh, while teammate Max Walker later registered a two-run shot in the eighth. Canisius was led at the dish by senior Jake Burlingame and redshirt-junior Gibson Krzeminski, as the two hit back-to-back home runs en route to a pair of two-hit performances.

The UMass Lowell bats took an early lead in the first, as Robert Gallagher scored on a Jiovel Lantigua sacrifice fly in the home half of the inning.

The Griffs finally broke through in the fourth, as Burlingame and Krzeminski went back-to-back with solo homers to lead off the inning. After three walks filled the bases, freshman Mike DeStefano drew the fourth walk of the frame to plate senior Jacob Victor for the third Canisius run.

UMass Lowell answered in the bottom of the fourth, as Vinnie Martin drove in Ciaran Devenney with a double, then Martin scored thanks to a balk and passed ball.

In the top of the fifth, Canisius quickly retook the lead at 4-3 when senior Stephen Bennett hit a sacrifice fly that Burlingame tagged up from third base and scored on. The home half of the inning saw the River Hawks tie the game again, as Devenney hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to bring in Keegan Calero.

The River Hawks retook the lead in the sixth, as Garret Roberts scored on a passed ball before Joey Castellanos drove in two more runs on a single to give his team a 7-4 advantage.

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh increased the UMass Lowell lead to 8-4, while a Gallagher sacrifice fly made it 9-4. Calero's three-run homer extended it to 12-4. In the eighth, Walker launched his pinch-hit, two-run shot to cap off the River Hawks' day at the plate.

Freshman Rockne Seidel started the game for the Blue and Gold, going 3.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit. Sal Fusco went four innings in the start for UMass Lowell, allowing four runs on three hits while fanning nine.

Gerry Siracusa was the winning pitcher, throwing three shutout innings in relief, while Canisius freshman Aaron Snyder was given the loss after being on the hook for three runs (one earned) without recording an out in the sixth.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"This weekend was tough results-wise, but allowed us to get a lot of guys experience in different spots that puts us in a position to grow. We saw some bad, we highlighted areas we need to improve upon and we all know we need to learn from this. We also saw some good things offensively as well as on the mound that we need to build on."

"Burlingame and Leader are two of our most athletic players that go about their business the right way. Whether they are 0-for-4 or 6-for-6, they bring the same mentality and they see strong results based on their work ethic. It's always fun to see them at their best."

Game Notes
• The all-time series between the two teams moves to 3-1 in favor of UMass Lowell.
• The last time Canisius hitters hit back-to-back home runs was March 31, 2019 against Manhattan, as a Billy Krull inside-the-park homer was followed by a solo shot from Bennett.
• Seidel and fellow freshman Tom Peltier made their collegiate debuts on Sunday.
• Burlingame and fellow senior Andy Leader both recorded at least one hit in all four games of the series.
• The 14 runs allowed on Sunday is the most by Canisius since March 16 of last season, when the Griffs gave up 16 runs in a loss at Indiana.
