Sanderlin’s 30-point Effort Not Enough in Loss to Saint Peter’s

Game Recap
Despite the first 30-point scoring effort by a Golden Griffin in 17 years, the Blue and Gold fell to Saint Peter's (7-16, 4-10 MAAC) by a final score of 67-58 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.

Junior Danielle Sanderlin finished the game with 30 points and nine rebounds to become the first Griff to reach the 30-point plateau since Jénel Stevens scored 31 on Feb. 27, 2003 versus Rider.  Sanderlin went 12-for-22 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the line. Sophomore transfer Shayla Sweeny tallied eight points off the bench in the loss. The Griffs finished the game shooting 40.7 percent from the floor and just 13.3 percent from 3-point land. Canisius won the battle on the glass, 37-32.

Saint Peter's was led by Taiah Thornton, who registered 30 points, going 12-for-24 from the field. Briyanah Richardson also reached double figures with 12 points while also dishing out a game-high six assists and team-best seven boards. The Peacocks finished 24-for-65 from the field, including 7-for-20 from the perimeter. Saint Peter's scored 21 points off of 21 Blue and Gold turnovers.

Canisius started the contest with four unanswered points before the Peacocks found the bottom of the basket and sparked a 10-2 run over the course of the next 2:36. The Griffs scored the next two baskets followed by another spurt by Saint Peter's that made the score 15-10 with 1:16 left in the opening quarter. After a Sanderlin bucket in the paint, Thornton beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer to give the Peacocks a 18-12 advantage after one.

Saint Peter's stayed in control of the contest until Sanderlin made her lone 3-pointer of the contest at the 5:59 mark of the second quarter, tying the game at 20-20. From there, the two teams would trade baskets to go into the locker rooms tied at 26-all.

Both teams would go up by as much as four points in the first five minutes of the second half. The Peacocks went up four just over a minute in, followed by an 8-0 spurt by the Griffs that gave them a 34-30 lead with 5:07 remaining in the third. Richardson would bang one home prior to the media timeout to cut the Canisius lead to one, 35-34.

The Peacocks took control out of the media timeout, going up by as much as six points, however the Golden Griffins would once again work their way back, making it a one-possession game after senior Shannon Conely hit a jumper just outside the paint to make the score 45-43 heading into the final stanza.

Saint Peter's took complete control during the final quarter of play, going on a 10-2 run in the first 4:37 of the frame to go up 57-45. Canisius would cut the Peacocks lead in half on a Sweeney layup with 1:41 remaining, but Saint Peter's would not allow the Griffs to get any closer as they closed the game out with a pair of free-throws from Thorton with less than a minute remaining.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"Defensively, a lack of awareness lead to too many breakdowns and it was very frustrating. You will never consistently win games if you do not expect more from yourself on that end of the floor. Throw in a number of turnovers on offense and those things don't get you wins on the road."

Game Notes
• With the loss, Canisius falls to 33-33 all-time against Saint Peter's.
• The Griffs scored 32 of their 58 points in the paint.
• Saturday was the third time this season that Canisius took a share of the lead into the break.
• Canisius moves to 3-7 on the season when winning the rebound battle.
• The Blue and Gold finished the game with a season-low 13.3 percent mark from the perimeter.
• Sanderlin's 30 points is a career-high for the Williamstown, Pa., product. She has now scored double-figures in each of the last six games.
