Game Recap: Baseball |

Leader Continues Hot Streak as Baseball Splits with UMass Lowell

Relying on strong starting pitching in both halves of a doubleheader, the Canisius baseball team was able to earn the split with UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon at Ting Park in Holly Springs, N.C. The Golden Griffins used a five-run second inning and an eight-run sixth to propel themselves to a 20-7 victory in game one before the River Hawks used back-to-back home runs to win game two by a 4-3 score.

With the split, the Griffs moved to 1-2 while the River Hawks hold a 2-1 record.

Game One Recap
Senior Jake Burlingame led the way at the plate with his two-run blast, totaling three hits, three runs and three RBI in addition to an outfield assist. Andy Leader continued to stay hot as well, notching three runs and three RBI in a two-hit performance.

Both teams struck early, as Robert Gallagher singled and then stole second, setting himself up to score on a Jiovel Lantigua single later on in the top of the first. Canisius then plated one run in the bottom half of the first when redshirt junior Gibson Krzeminski singled home Leader.

The Griffs surged ahead in the second inning with five runs, taking the lead on a two-run single by Leader. Burlingame put the Blue and Gold up 5-1 with his first home run of the season, while later in the inning, redshirt junior Vinny Chiarenza was plunked with the bases loaded for another run.

The River Hawks cut the lead to 6-2 in the third, as Keegan Calero doubled and later scored on a fielder's choice. Canisius answered in the home half of the inning, as a stolen base by Burlingame allowed redshirt sophomore Mike Mazzara to swipe home on the throw to second.

Canisius added four more runs in the fifth thanks to Leader's second triple in as many days and singles by Burlingame and redshirt senior Canice Ejoh. UMass Lowell cut into their deficit in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 11-3.

The Blue and Gold piled on in the bottom of the sixth, plating eight runs in the frame, including freshmen Mike DeStefano and Kenny Dodson both tallying their first collegiate hits in the inning. DeStefano doubled to leadoff the inning, while Dodson singled home the final two Canisius runs in the sixth.

UMass Lowell did score four more runs, highlighted by a two-run Gallagher single in the eighth, but Canisius also added its 20th run of the contest off another Dodson single.

Senior Kyle Warner picked up the win, going six innings and allowing three runs while striking out four to earn the quality start. Matt Draper suffered the loss for the River Hawks, surrendering six runs (five earned) in two innings after getting the starting nod.

Game Two Recap
Andy Leader extended his hot streak in the second game of the doubleheader with his third multi-hit game of the weekend, while sophomore Trevor Henneman also tallied two hits to highlight the Canisius offense.

On the mound, sophomore Andrew Fron put together a gem in the nightcap, dealing shutout baseball for five innings by issuing just two hits while fanning seven UMass Lowell hitters, but the Griffs could not hold the lead after the righty exited the game after the fifth.

Leader helped the Griffs launch the opening salvo in the first, scoring on a passed ball. Sophomore Kyle Kush added another run in the second when he hit a sacrifice fly to bring in DeStefano.

UMass Lowell mounted its rally in the sixth, as Cam Climo hit a two-run homer that was followed by Vinnie Martin's solo shot to right field. The River Hawks then added the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh when Calero roped a double to bring in Ciaran Devenney.

Canisius threatened to even the game in the bottom of the seventh, as back-to-back doubles by Burlingame and Krzeminski made it 4-3 and the Griffs later pushed the tying run to third with one out, but Josh Becker registered his second save of the season to cap off the comeback for UMass Lowell.

Collin Duffley secured the win, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits. Becker fnished with one run allowed and two punchouts in 1.2 innings of relief.
