Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Buffalo

Game Recap
Despite 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals from Canisius freshman Dani Haskell in her first college game, visiting Buffalo proved to be too much for the Golden Griffins, as the Bulls posted an 87-45 win over the Blue and Gold Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The Bulls move to 2-1 on the year with the victory, while the Griffs start the season 0-1.

Haskell shined in her debut for Canisius, leading the team with her 12 points after she knocked down four 3-point field goals in 37 minutes. Juniors Erika Joseph and Kayla Jackson also earned double-digit points in the contest with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jackson, a transfer from UMBC, also led the Griffs with five boards.

For Buffalo, Dyaisha Fair posted 17 points, while Adebola Adeyeye added 15 points and nine rebounds to the winning effort. As a team, Buffalo shot 51.6 percent from the field and ended the contest with a 54-20 advantage on the glass. The Bulls were able to turn 21 offensive rebounds into 26 second-chance points.

Buffalo took an early 4-0 lead after Adeyeye got hot early, however, it did not take long for Haskell to secure her first career points with a 3-pointer from the left corner to cut the lead. The Griffs were able to head into the first media timeout tied 9-9, but from there, the Bulls began to take charge with a 11-2 run, highlighted by six points by Summer Hemphill, to close out the quarter to make the score 18-11. With a nine-point performance in the second quarter by Cheyenne McEvans, the Bulls went into the halftime break up 40-22.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"This was our first time on the floor five-on-five with the numbers that we have and the injuries that we have. Today, we had 10 people on the floor together and dressed at the same time, with some of them available on a limited basis. It has been a challenge to develop some confidence and after having so much canceled due to COVID, we were able to go out and play a heck of a basketball team."

Game Notes
• Sunday's game marked the 48th all-time meeting between the two schools, with Canisius leading the series 30-18.
• Canisius opened its season against Buffalo for the first time since the 2012-13 campaign.
• Haskell's 12 points are the most for a Canisius freshman in her collegiate debut since Lauren D'Hont had 12 points win a 77-67 win over Detroit Mercy Nov. 8, 2013.
• Haskell is just the third Canisius freshman since 2000-01 to hit four 3-pointers in her first college games, joining former Griffs Jen Morabito (vs. St. Bonaventure on Nov. 14, 2011) and Amanda Cavo (vs. Buffalo on Nov. 10, 2006).
• The 11 points for Joseph is a career-high for the junior, surpassing her previous record of nine points, scored two seasons ago against Oakland.
• Shaunae Brown and Haskell both played more than 35 minutes in the season opener.
