Women's Basketball Falls to Marist on the Road

Game Recap
Despite a strong start that saw Canisius lead Marist after one quarter of play, the host Red Foxes proved to be too much for the Golden Griffins, as Marist posted a 64-44 win over the Blue and Gold Friday night at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The win moves Marist to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play, while Canisus slipped to 0-2 on the year, 0-1 in conference action.

Canisius came out of the game strong and used a 9-2 run in the opening frame to take an 18-13 lead after 10:00 of play. In that scoring run, junior Kayla Jackson scored five points for the Blue and Gold. However, the Griffs' offense went cold in the second quarter, as the Blue and Gold tallied just five points on 2-of-12 shooting. Marist shot 40 percent from the floor to take a 27-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Marist stretched its lead to nine at 45-36 after three quarters of play before pulling away with a 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter en route to the victory. Canisius senior Anndea Zeigler led the Griffs with 14 points to go with four rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. Junior Erika Joseph added seven points, two assists and two steals in the losing cause for the Blue and Gold, who shot 34.6 percent from the floor, despite making 7-of-17 tries from 3-point land.

For Marist, Sarah Barcello put up 18 points, while Caitlin Weimar tallied 17 points to go with six rebounds.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"I loved the energy and the way we executed the game plan early on, especially on the defensive end of the floor. As fatigue set in physically, we lost our attention to detail mentally and that really hurts us. They understand that rebounding has been our Achilles heel the first two games, but until we commit to fixing it for an entire game, we're going to continue to struggle."

Game Notes
• Friday was the 53rd all-time meeting between the two schools, with Marist leading the series 39-14.
• Zeigler's are a career high for her against a MAAC opponent.
• Sophomore Shaunae Brown played a team-high 36 minutes, the second-straight game she's played 36 minutes of the contest.
• The seven 3-pointers are the most for the Griffs since Feb. 27, 2020 when the team drained seven treys against Iona.
