Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second Half Burst Not Enough for Women's Basketball

Game Recap
A 14-1 run to start the second half was not enough for the Canisius women's basketball team, as the Golden Griffins fell to the Saint Peter's Peacocks 69-53 on Saturday night at the John Moore Athletics Center in Jersey City, N.J.

The Peacocks moved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in MAAC play with the victory, while the Blue and Gold fell to 0-4 on the year, 0-3 in league action.

Freshman Dani Haskell led Canisius with 14 points, with eight of those coming from the free-throw line. Sophomore Shaunae Brown added 12 points and six assists to the effort, while junior Kayla Jackson was good for seven points and nine rebounds.

The two teams played an even-tempo game through the first 18 minutes, but Saint Peter's used an 11-2 run to close out the second quarter to take a 40-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. Out of intermission, Canisus rallied back in the third quarter on the power of a 14-1 where the Griffs' defense held Saint Peter's to an 0-for-12 performance from the floor. The Blue and Gold outscored the Peacocks 14-7 in the third frame and trailed by three at 47-44 after 30 minutes of action.

In the fourth quarter, Saint Peter's shot 50.0 percent from the field and hit 3-of-5 tries from 3-point land to outscore the Griffs 22-9 for the frame en route to the victory. Kendrea Williams had a game-high 19 points in the winning effort for the Peacocks.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"It's all about consistency. Consistency with communication, with execution - the little things that we have control over. We need to start right there. I understand the challenges they face right now, whether it is a sudden change to the schedule or only having eight healthy players dressed. But that means you dig in and claw to compete and we did not put our best foot forward for 40 minutes tonight and we let one slip away."

Game Notes
• Saturday was the 67th all time meeting between the Griffs and Saint Peter's, with the Peacocks leading the series 34-33.
• The Griffs scored a season-high 26 points in the paint.
• Saint Peter's held a 53-29 advantage on the glass, and turned 22 offensive boards into 27 points.
• Haskell now leads the MAAC in free-throw percentage on the year after making 8-of-9 from the stripe.
