Slow Starts Dooms Women's Basketball

Saint Peter's opened the game on a 17-3 run and never looked back as it cruised to a 65-40 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Sunday night at the John Moore Athletic Center in Jersey City, N.J.

The Peacocks (5-3, 4-0 MAAC) achieved their first 4-0 start to league play in 24 years as they completed a sweep of the two-game series against the visiting Griffs (0-5, 0-4 MAAC).

Sophomore Shaunae Brown served as the catalyst for the Canisius offense in game two as the Toronto native was the only Golden Griffin to reach double figures with 12 points on the night, highlighted by a 3-for-8 effort from beyond the arc.

Junior Erika Joseph and freshman Dani Haskell tallied eight points apiece while junior transfer Kayla Jackson led the team on the boards with 11 rebounds.

Saint Peter's took control of the game from the opening tip, holding a 17-3 lead over Canisius until the final 50 seconds of the first quarter.

The Griffs rallied to score the final five points of the first half to trim their deficit to nine at the break, but the Peacocks came out strong in the second half with a 19-7 run to build a 21-point cushion. Saint Peter's star Kendrea Williams earned nine of her game-high 17 points during the surge, while Taiah Thornton chipped in seven.

The Peacocks remained comfortably in control the rest of the way, out-scoring the Blue and Gold 15-8 in the fourth quarter to determine the 25-point margin of victory.
