Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Marist Sweeps Women's Basketball

Marist tallied the opening 11 points on the game and never looked back as it cruised to an 82-61 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday night at the McCann Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Red Foxes (3-0, 0-2 MAAC) remained undefeated on the young season as they completed a sweep of the two-game series against the visiting Griffs (0-3, 0-2 MAAC) to open conference play.

Freshman Dani Haskell led three Canisius players in double figures with 19 points after only scoring four points in the series opener on Friday. The rookie went a perfect 6-for-6 at the line and added three rebounds and two steals to cap off her impressive night.

Senior Anndea Zeigler and sophomore Shaunae Brown also tallied double-digit points for the Griffs with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Marist took control of the game from the opening tip, beginning the contest with an 11-0 run that was highlighted by senior Sarah Barcello, who tallied nine of her team-high 18 points during the nearly four-minute stretch.

Trailing 43-23 at the break, Canisus attempted to claw its way back into the game at the start of the third, as five points from Haskell highlighted a 7-0 run that made it a 13-point game.

That would be as close as the Griffs would get, however, as the Red Foxes responded to the Canisius salvo with seven straight points of their own to ignite a 16-3 stretch that put the game out of reach.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments

"We came out flat in the first quarter and Marist took advantage of that. There was no communication and we were slow all around. The next three quarters, we were a completely different team, but that's part of the learning process for this group. There's no excuse for that. They played a very good team on the road and we gave it away. Offensively, we had much better execution tonight and our commitment to rebounding improved over last night, so that was good to see. The challenge for our team now is to build on that next weekend."

Game Notes
• Saturday was the 54th all-time meeting between the two schools, with Marist increasing its lead in the series to 40-14 with the victory.
• Ziegler scored double-digit points in back-to-back games for the first time since scoring 13 and 12 points against Saint Peter's and Iona, respectively, in the 2018-19 season.
• This marks the third consecutive game for the Griffs in which three players have tallied double-digit points.
