Marist Spoils Women’s Basketball Kids Day, 90-59

Game Recap
Three Red Foxes recorded 13-or-more points, highlighted by Alana Gilmer's 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting to help lead Marist (10-2, 3-0 MAAC) to a 90-59 victory over the Canisius women's basketball team (2-10, 1-2 MAAC) Thursday afternoon on Kids Day in Buffalo, N.Y.

Gilmer grabbed seven rebounds to go with her game-high 24 points. Rebekah Hand added 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win while Grace Vander Weide collected 13 points and 10 assists. Marist finished the contest with a 54.7 percent mark from the floor, including a 52.0 percent clip from the perimeter. The Red Foxes scored 28 points off of Canisius' 20 turnovers and outscored the Golden Griffins in the paint (34-20) and off the bench (28-26). Marist also won the battle on the glass, grabbing 34 rebounds compared to just 27 for the Griffs.

Junior Danielle Sanderlin finished with a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds, followed by D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks who tallied 10 points and two rebounds, however, the senior turned the ball over five times. Senior Shannon Conely provided eight points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting. Canisius went 21-for-51 from the field, including 7-for-14 from 3-point land, resulting in a field goal percentage of 41.2 and 3-point field goal percentage of 50.0.

Canisius kept it close in the first 5:41 of the opening quarter before Marist used a 13-5 spurt that helped the visitors take a 25-18 advantage after 10-minutes of action, a lead they would not relinquish.

In the second quarter, the Red Foxes used a 7-0 scoring run that lasted 3:18 of game play and gave the Red Foxes its largest lead of the first half, 38-24. Canisius would trade buckets with Marist in the final three minutes of the first half to bring the score to 44-30 at the break.

Marist kept its foot on the gas out of halftime as Gilmer scored nine of the Red Foxes' 23 points in the frame to build the advantage to 21 points, 67-46. Canisius turned the ball over six times in the period, resulting in 12 points for the Red Foxes.

The fourth and final frame was more of the same from Marist as the visitors went up by as much as 27 in the final stanza, 83-56. Despite the Blue and Gold getting a spark from Conely, who scored six of her eight points in the quarter, the game was too far out of reach.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"I think that the message to the team is 'are you ok with being that team, are you ok with nine rebounds in a half of basketball, are you ok with having to have your coach call you out in the middle of the third quarter to start executing better on both ends'.

"Dani Sanderlin was one player who did what we asked her to do on both ends of the floor, she executed the game plan and if you look at her statistical line, you'll see it panned out for her. I also thought Shannon gave us a lot of good minutes off the bench and also tried to do things we were looking for, but that was a spark we unfortunately didn't get until the second half."

Game Notes
• Canisius has now dropped eight straight games to Marist and has fallen to 14-39 all-time against the Red Foxes.
• Sophomore transfer Shayla Sweeney returned to the floor today, scoring seven points in just over seven minutes of action.
• Sanderlin reached double-digits for the fifth time this season and 16th time in her career. The Williamstown, N.J., product also led the Griffs in scoring for the second time this season.
• Canisius shot 50.0 percent or better from 3-point range for the third time this season and are now 1-2 when doing so.
