Siena Storms Back to Defeat Women’s Basketball, 68-61

Game Recap
Siena's Margo Peterson and Amari Anthony combined for 36 points to help Saints come back and defeat Canisius (2-11, 1-3 MAAC), 68-63, in MAAC women's basketball action in the Koessler Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

Peterson and Anthony finished the game with 18 points and six rebounds, respectively. Peterson connected on five 3-pointers while Anthony went 7-for-11 from the field. Ashley Williamson added 14 points in the win. As a team, Siena (3-11, 1-4 MAAC) shot 44.2 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from 3-point range. The Saints recorded 32 bench points and won the battle on the glass, 35-28.

For Canisius, junior Danielle Sanderlin finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season while also dishing out a team-best four assists. Senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks tallied 16 points and graduate transfer AJ Timbers went 5-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-7 from three to finish the game with 15 points. As a team, the Golden Griffins shot 44.2 percent for the game, including 31.3 percent from the perimeter.

Canisius seemed to have control of the contest in the first two quarters, as the Griffs took an 18-17 lead with 1:27 left in the first quarter. That lead would be extended to 12-points, 40-28, following a run of 10 unanswered from Canisius with 1:36 left in the half. Siena would hit a 3-pointer before the break, giving the Griffs a nine-point lead, 40-31, heading into the locker room.

A 5-0 run by the Saints in the third quarter brought the Canisius lead down to two-points, 49-47, which forced the Griffs to call a timeout. Senior Anna Sweny who finished the game with five points, three assists and a career-high seven steals nearly gave Canisius a four-point advantage heading into the final stanza but her buzzer-beating basket was reversed after an official review.

That didn't seem to hurt the Griffs momentum to start the fourth as Canisius built its lead back up to seven points, 54-47, with 8:32 remaining in the contest. From there, however, Siena would work its way back, outscoring Canisius 18-5 over the next 7:09 of game action to take a six-point lead and hold on for the win.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"When you are struggling to find ways to win games you have to pay attention to the little things. The (team) has to understand if we can't find ways to focus on those little things more we are going to have a tough time winning games."

"I love (Sanderlin's) energy, she comes prepared for every game, she understands the game plan inside and out and she executes it."
