Women's Basketball Earns First MAAC Win at Monmouth

 Game Recap
Four Golden Griffins registered double-digits in the scoring column en route to a 71-62 defeat of Monmouth (4-8, 1-2 MAAC) Saturday afternoon in MAAC women's basketball action from OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, N.J. The win was Canisius' first league win of the season.

Senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks scored a game-high 20 points, while teammate Tiana Pugh added 17 points and eight rebounds. Junior Danielle Sanderlin tallied 15 points and eight boards of her own, followed by graduate transfer AJ Timbers who poured in 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting, including a 4-for-6 clip from 3-point range. Senior Anna Sweny grabbed 10 caroms to go with three points, a block and an assist. As a team, Canisius shot 40.6 percent (26-64) from the field and 34.8 percent (8-23) from 3-point range. The Blue and Gold outrebounded Monmouth, 46-40, while the Canisius reserves tallied 16 points compared to just seven for the Hawks.

Monmouth was led Alexa Middleton and Lucy Thomas who each finished with a double-double. Middleton recorded 18 points and 14 rebounds while Thomas scored 15 points and grabbed 11 caroms. Sierra Green added 15 points in the loss. The Hawks finished the contest shooting 36.8 percent on their field goal attempts and just 19.4 percent on their 3-pointers.

In a game that saw eight lead changes, the Golden Griffins (2-9, 1-1 MAAC) took control at the 15-second mark of the third quarter when Patterson-Ricks scored in the lane, drawing a foul on the shot. After missing the ensuing free-throw, Pugh grabbed the offensive rebound and found freshman Shaunae Brown for the layup to give Canisius a three-point lead, 52-49, heading into the final 10-minutes of play.

From there, Canisius scored five unanswered points to start the fourth quarter, building its lead to 57-49. Monmouth would claw back to get within one, 63-62, with 3:40 remaining in the contest. However, Canisius wouldn't let the Hawks retake the lead as the Blue and Gold scored the final eight points of the game to secure the win.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"Someone asked after the game what I learned about my team and to be honest, this victory is more of what they learned about themselves. We displayed better habits which resulted in fewer turnovers as well as less second-chance shots. That's how you win on the road and that's what they're capable of."
