Third-Period Comeback Dooms Hockey at RIT

RIT scored four goals in a 3:32 span midway through the third period to erase a three-goal deficit and defeat Canisius, 5-4, in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, N.Y.

Trailing 4-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Tigers (13-10-3, 9-6-3-1 AHA) used a pair of goals from Elijah Gonsalves and single tally from Shawn Cameron in a 94-second outburst to tie the game before Kobe Walker netted the eventual game-winner a little more than two minutes later to earn the comeback victory complete the sweep of the home-and-home series.

Senior Matt Hoover, junior Matt Long, sophomore David Baskerville and freshman Ryan Miotto scored for the Golden Griffins (6-14-4, 5-9-4-3 AHA).

Gonsalves began the game-changing sequence at the 11:38 mark of the third, re-directing a feed from Adam Brubacher past Canisius goaltender Jacob Barczewski to make it a 4-2 contest.

Cameron brought the Tigers within one just 28 seconds later when his shot from the right sidewall found its way through traffic and past Barczewski.

Gonsalves tied the game with his second of the period with 13:12 elapsed in the third, firing home a rebound from the middle of the slot after the initial attempt from Hamacher was turned aside.

Walker put home side in front for good with 4:50 remaining in regulation, using a stretch pass from Darren Brady to get behind the Griffs defense before beating Barczewski with a wrist shot to the glove side.

Earlier in the contest, the teams traded goals less than four minutes into the first. Miotto banged home a rebound at the 3:14 mark while Canisius was on the power play to open the scoring before Ryan Kruper answered for RIT just 14 seconds later as he beat Barczewski with a shot from the right side on a rush into the Griffs zone.

Canisius scored three goals in the second to build a 4-1 cushion. Long gave the Griffs a 2-1 lead 5:06 into the second when sophomore Derek Hamelin's point shot deflected off of him and into the goal.

Baskerville made it a 3-1 game with 16:26 remaining, redirecting a point shot from junior Logan Gestro for his first of the campaign before Hoover made it a three-goal lead for the Griffs in the final minute of the frame, beating RIT goaltender Logan Drackett with a shot from the right side on the rush, setting the stage for the Tigers' third-period comeback.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"That's as tough a loss as I can remember. There's learning from it, but that one obviously stings, being up by three and having an opponent come back. They got the momentum, they kept pushing. We obviously didn't do enough in those moments to twist the momentum our way.

"You can look at film, you can you can try to find out exactly what it was. Obviously, the crowd was a factor for them tonight. Those are not good enough excuses in my book. We have enough guys that have been through what it takes to win. Even our young guys know what it takes to win and we didn't. They were more assertive; they played harder and it was only for eight minutes, really. We didn't have a response. We didn't push back, we didn't win a shift when we needed to go out and win a shift. Just very disappointed in in the outcome. Very disappointed how we played in the last eight minutes of a road game that we should have won. So, we're disappointed, but we evaluate it, we learn, we get better. But, this one's going to sting, but we can't let it linger with this group because we're going the right way. That growth will continue.

"What I take (from the second) is Derek Hamlin gets his first career point on a good point shot that Longer (Matt Long) tipped in. David Baskerville gets his first goal of the season; Ryan Miotto gets his third goal in as many games. MacGregor Sinclair gets his first point of the year, I felt he was due. So, we get some guys that haven't been on the scoresheet to show up there, so we take that. When I think about this game, it's obviously going to be the way it ended, more so than the second period, but we got some guys that haven't produced a ton this year getting some points, so that's a good thing. It's a good sign for our team."
