Hutchison’s Overtime Heroics Lift Hockey Past Army

Senior forward Nick Hutchison scored with 26 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Canisius to a 3-2 victory over Army in Atlantic Hockey action Friday at Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y.

Hutchison, freshman Keaton Mastrodonato and senior Matt Hoover scored for the Golden Griffins (7-14-4, 6-9-4-3 AHA). Hoover also pitched in two assists to complete a three-point night for the forward.

Brendan Soucie and Michael Wilson accounted for the two goals for the Black Knights (14-11-2, 11-8-2-2 AHA).

Hoover began the game-winning sequence when he collected the puck in the Canisius zone and fired a cross-ice stretch pass that sophomore Lee Lapid was able to corral at the Army blue line. Lapid entered the zone, fending off a pair of Black Knights defenders before finding Hutchison, who beat Army goaltender Trevin Koslowski with a shot from the middle of the slot for his team-leading 14th goal of the campaign.

Trailing 2-1 late in the third, Army was able to tie the game and force overtime in the final minute of regulation when Wilson deflected a point shot from Alex Wilkinson into the Canisius net after the Black Knights had pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker.

After a scoreless first, the teams traded special-team goals in a 31-second span less than four minutes into the second.

Mastrodonato gave Canisius a 1-0 lead with 3:08 elapsed in the middle frame with a shorthanded goal when his pass on a 3-on-1 rush deflected off an Army defender and into the goal.

Soucie brought the Black Knights level on the next shift, beating Griffs netminder Jacob Barczewski with a wrist shot to the glove side for a power-play goal to tie the game at 1-1.

Hoover restored Canisius' lead with a power-play goal at the 5:28 mark of the third, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence for his 11th of the season to make it a 2-1 contest.

Barczewski recorded 17 saves in goal for Canisius. Kozlowski recorded 19 saves between the pipes for Army.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"A huge win for our team. Obviously, to get three points on the road against anybody is important if we're looking to climb up the standings, but to do it against a strong Army team, I could not be prouder of the effort it took tonight and how we executed late in the game and got a huge overtime win. Very proud of our group.

"Adversity is real. It's in every hockey game. You can look at score sheets and box scores and try to figure out how the game went and when you look at ours tonight you see a goal go in late when we're up 2-1. But where our growth is and part of the reason why I love this team is, we can handle adversity. We're young, but we're not young anymore. When adversity hits, our guys breathe, they stay calm. They understand what their job is. They go out and try to win the game. So, even though Army gets the late goal to tie it up, it didn't affect us. In overtime, we did a great job of responding. There was no momentum for Army in overtime and we get a huge goal from our top line to secure the three points. So, growth is absolutely there and adversity is a real thing that our team is learning how to handle. I couldn't be prouder of how we're doing that.

"There's another great crowd tonight. It was loud and proud and at times rowdy, which is great to see. You're playing a road game; you're trying to find out what it is like to play a really solid road game and when you look at shots on net at 22-19, both teams are playing stingy. Both teams are playing hard, they're competitive. It requires second-chance efforts on defense and it requires second-chance effort to get anything offensively. So, tonight felt like preparation for games near the end of the year. We're approaching that. But it requires what we had tonight and more once it comes playoff time. But, our focus is tomorrow. We have got a quick turnaround for a four o'clock game against a team that will be hungry. We'll be prepared, ready and focused for them."
