The nation's leading scorer, Stella Johnson scored a game-high 33 points to lead Rider (13-2, 6-0 MAAC) to a 57-70 win over the Golden Griffins Thursday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action from the Koessler Athletic Center in downtown Buffalo, N.Y.

Johnson finished the game with a double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her 33 points. The senior also collected seven steals and five assists in the win. Teammate Amari Johnson also finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards. Lea Farve added 10 points for the Broncs. As a team, Rider made 41.3 percent of its field goal attempts and outrebounded Canisius 42-29, including 17-8 on the offensive end, resulting in 17 second-chance points.

The Blue and Gold (2-14, 1-6 MAAC) were once again led by senior D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks who poured in 25 points, going 5-for-13 from the field and 12-for-16 from the charity stripe. Junior Danielle Sanderlin led the Griffs in rebounding with 10 caroms while also generating a team-high three steals. AJ Timbers finished the game with 10 points and four rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Canisius shot 32.6 percent from the field, including 45.5 percent from 3-point range. The team finished the game 22-for-29 from the free-throw line.

Canisius and Rider traded leads six times in the first half with neither team holding anything larger than a six-point lead. The Broncs had a five-point lead, 15-10, before the first media timeout, however, the Golden Griffins would work back to tie the game at 20 following Patterson-Ricks making one of her two free throws with 1:23 left in the first.

The game would remain tied until sophomore Shayla Sweeney opened the second quarter with a bucket in the lane, which led to six unanswered points for Canisius, its largest lead of the contest. The Griffs would lead for a majority of the stanza before Johnson sunk a jumper in the lane to give Rider a one-point advantage with 21 seconds left in the half. Rider would take a 36-35 lead into the locker room.

Rider took control of the game halfway through the third when Johnson finished off the fast break opportunity with a layup, making the score 45-44. The Broncs wouldn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest as Canisius went 3-for-21 from the field in the second half, resulting in a 13-point win for the Broncs.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"I think the team understands they can play with anybody when they are playing effectively. Tonight, I thought our decision making when we tried to attack some of that pressure went back and we didn't share the ball enough. No matter our shortcomings tonight, the rebounding margin at the end of the game is what you're not going to overcome against a team like Rider."

• Patterson-Ricks' career-high 12 points at the line surpassed her previous career-best seven made free throws she set as a junior at Marist on Feb. 16, 2019.
• For the sixth time this season and ninth time in her career, Fayetteville, N.Y., native Patterson-Ricks scored more than 20 points. It was also the 23rd time she led the Blue and Gold in scoring.
