Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comeback Falls Short as Women’s Basketball Falls to Fairfield

Game Recap
Sam Kramer connected on a last second layup to lift Fairfield (7-6, 4-0 MAAC) to a 72-70 win over Canisius (2-12, 1-4 MAAC) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at Alumni Hall in Fairfield, Conn.

Fairfield led for the first 25:29 of play before seniors D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks and AJ Timbers connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 48-48 with 5:31 left in the third quarter. From there, the two teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the game before Kramer drove past the Canisius defense and connected on a layup with just one second remaining. The Stags thwarted the Golden Griffins last chance as the inbound pass was deflected and time ran out.

Kramer finished with 13 points, four rebounds and five assists to go with 19 points from Lou Lopez-Senechal who went 6-for-13 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Katie Armstrong and Callie Cavanaugh also recorded double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Fairfield finished the contest with a 46.8 percent clip from the field and 42.1 percent mark from 3-point land.

Junior Danielle Sanderlin recorded her second-straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Timbers went 3-for-3 from behind the arc to finish the game with 14 points along with six boards and four assists, while Patterson-Ricks added 16 points and three steals in the loss. As a team, the Golden Griffins shot 44.8 percent from the field, including a 53.8 percent from 3-point range. Canisius won the battle on the glass, 34-33.

Head Coach Scott Hemer's Postgame Comments
"I am really proud of the team for tonight's effort. They played their hearts out and should have been rewarded. A slow start defensively put us down, however, they showed a lot of character recovering from it. In the end, I needed to do a better job at the end of the game and that is on me."
