Third-Period Rally Nets Hockey Tie at Bentley

Canisius scored three goals in the third period to rally from a three-goal deficit and post a 4-4 tie versus Bentley in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Junior Grant Meyer scored twice while senior Nick Hutchison and sophomore Lee Lapid tallied single goals for the Golden Griffins (5-12-3, 4-7-3 AHA), who saw their unbeaten streak extended to six games with the comeback tie. Junior defenseman Logan Gestro scored during 3-on-3 overtime to earn the extra point for Canisius.

Matt Bosiewski, Luke Santerno, Jakov Novak and Will Garrin accounted for the Falcons' (8-11-3, 6-9-2 AHA) four goals, all of which came during a 6:33 span in the second period.

Trailing 4-1 at the start of the third, the Griffs mounted a third-period comeback for the second evening in a row, scoring twice in a 35-second span midway through the frame to make it a one-goal contest before tying the game with an extra-attacker goal in the final minute of regulation to force overtime.

Meyer began the comeback at the 9:56 mark of the third, stuffing home a goalmouth feed from senior Matt Hoover to make it a 4-2 game. Lapid brought the Griffs within one on the next shift, placing a snap shot off the crossbar and into the Bentley goal to trim the Canisius deficit to 4-3.

Canisius kept pressuring and was rewarded with a power play during the final two minutes of regulation. With the goalie pulled, Meyer put home a loose puck from close range to tie the game and send it to overtime.

After neither team found the back of the net in 5-on-5 overtime, the game was declared a tie and advanced to a 3-on-3 overtime, where Gestro took a pass from Meyer in front of the Bentley goal and flipped the puck past Bentley goalkeeper Fraser Kirk to earn the Griffs the extra point.

Earlier in the contest, Hutchison opened the scoring with a power-play goal just 58 seconds into the second, putting home a loose puck from the middle of the slot for his team-leading 11th goal of the campaign.

Gosiewski knotted the score at 1-1 just past the midway point of the frame, deflecting a point shot past Canisius keeper Jacob Barczewski from the right faceoff circle.

The Falcons took the lead less than two minutes later on an unassisted effort from Santerno, who collected a turnover at the top of the Canisius zone and fired a wrist shot that Barczewski got a piece of, but was unable to keep out of the goal, to make it a 2-1 game.

Bentley added a pair of tallies less than a minute apart before the end of the second to expand its lead to 4-1. Novak made it a 3-1 contest the 16:09 mark of the frame, wiring home a wrist shot on the break during 4-on-4 action before Garin capped the Falcons' second-period barrage on the next shift, putting home a rebound during a goalmouth scramble, setting the stage for Canisius' comeback.

Barczewski finished with 30 saves for Canisius. Kirk turned aside 26 shots for the host Falcons.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"I love our team. I've used the word resiliency a lot lately and it obviously comes up again tonight. It's hard to play 60-65 minutes against any opponent. I thought Bentley was really, really good for two periods. It's 4-1 going into the third and it was another discussion in the room that, 'hey, we know what to do.' We made a small adjustment and it has nothing to do with an adjustment that coaches make in these games. It was compete and heart, along with just some grit. We were really gritty tonight. There are a couple guys I felt were spectacular. Lee Lapid was unbelievable, Grant Meyer and Matt Hoover's effort in the third period, we just jumped on their back. They're carrying us right now. So, it's a great overtime win for our team. We obviously go home with two points in a successful weekend. But most importantly, we're going home proud of everybody that wears Blue and Gold. It was another gritty effort from the Griffs tonight.

"A game like this, it gives you an opportunity, if it happens again, we have something to talk about. So that's a huge positive for our team. If we get down on the road or down at home or really in any game, this weekend is something that we can we can point to, guys can talk about it. They can say 'remember when we were at Bentley and it wasn't going our way and all of a sudden we got it done?' So, that experience will be extremely valuable for us moving forward. It's not directed directly at momentum, but it's definitely an experience that we will carry with us."
