Hockey Extends Streak with Tie; Earns Extra Point at Sacred Heart

Canisius extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 3-3 tie at league-leading Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey action Friday at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.

Senior Nick Hutchison, junior Austin Alger and sophomore Lee Lapid scored for the Golden Griffins (5-12-4, 4-7-3-3 AHA), who used a breakaway goal from Lapid in 3-on-3 overtime to pick up the extra point in the standings. Freshman goaltender Jacob Barczewski matched his career high with 33 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Vito Bavaro, Jeppe Urup and Matt Tugnutt accounted for the three goals for the host Pioneers (14-7-2, 13-5-1-0 AHA). Josh Benson made 17 saves in goal for Sacred Heart.

Bavaro opened the scoring with less than four minutes remaining in the first period, roofing a rebound past the glove of Barczewski from just off the right post after defenseman Alex Bates' initial attempt from the right point was denied.

Hutchison brought the Griffs level at the 8:58 mark of the second period, chipping a feed from Lapid over the right shoulder of Sacred Heart keeper Josh Benson while on the break for his team-leading 12th goal of the campaign.

Urup restored the Pioneers' lead just before the five-minute mark of the third with a wrist shot from the top of the right point that found its way through traffic and into the upper right-hand corner of the net to make it a 2-1 contest.

Alger answered for Canisius a little more than a minute later to tie the game at 2-2 redirected home a goalmouth feed from David Melaragni for his fourth of the campaign.

Lapid staked Canisius to its first lead of the game with a power-play goal at the midway point of the third, firing home a loose puck from the middle of the slot for his eighth of the season.

Tugnutt forced overtime with 3:05 remaining, tallying a power-play goal of his own for Sacred Heart when he deflected a point shot past Barczewski just 11 seconds after Canisius was called for tripping.

After neither team scored during a five-minute overtime, the game was declared a tie and went to a 3-on-3 overtime. Lapid earned the extra point for the Griffs with a breakaway goal 1:14 into the frame, taking a stretch pass from Melaragni and beating Benson with a backhanded effort that went off the crossbar and into the goal.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It was an emotional game. We caught a bit of a break in 3-on-3 with them turning the puck over and springing Lee Lapid for a breakaway and obviously it was an unbelievable finish by him to win the game. It's been a bit of a coming-out party for Lee, I thought that was he was awesome tonight. He was unbelievable. We're getting individual efforts and team consistency right now. Lee was great. He gets three points; two goals late in the game, one on the power play and one in 3-on-3 and was strong on the puck. Another outstanding performance by Barczewski as well. He kept us in the game. We feel that we have a lot of confidence. Any way the game is going, we feel like we've experienced them all lately and we're coming out on the right side. It's because we're playing the right way, we're being positive and playing together. So, it was an exciting game. We get the 3-on-3 win and now we rest up and prepare for tomorrow.

"We were stingy (on defense tonight). We were pesky. We really concentrated on keeping them out of the middle of the ice. I think about the goals against and there's one mistake where we don't wall off a guy in front of the net and they get a goal. It was nice play on the power play by Tugnutt late in the game, a quick shot to the net, and he tips it out of the air. That was a great play and then a big-time point shot for their second goal. So, I do like how we're defending. We're possessing the puck, we're hard to play against, we're committed to coming back and picking up guys and we're very dedicated to breaking the puck out properly and playing together. We're supporting the puck well. When we pass the puck well, which I thought we did as the game went on, we have the puck more and therefore, we need to defend less. When we do that, we're tough to play against. I could not be prouder of another great effort against a quality opponent on the road tonight. We need to continue to keep defense our focus.
