Hockey Battles Back to Record Tie at Bentley

Canisius tallied three unanswered goals to rally from a three-goal deficit to record a 3-3 tie versus Bentley in Atlantic Hockey action Friday at Bentley Arena in Waltham, Mass.

Seniors Matt Hoover and Nick Hutchison and sophomore Lee Lapid all scored for the
the Golden Griffins (5-12-2, 4-7-2 AHA), who extended their unbeaten streak to five games with Friday's tie. Hoover notched the lone goal in the second round of the sudden-victory shootout to earn Canisius an extra point in the league standings.

Freshman goaltender Jacob Barczewski was once again solid between the pipes as he made 33 saves for Canisius, who was out-shot by a 36-21 margin in the contest.

Jakov Novak and Luke Santerno recorded a goal and an assist each for the Falcons (8-11-2, 6-9-1 AHA) while Brendan Hamblet also found the back of the net for the hosts. Aidan Pelino made 18 stops in goal for Bentley.

Trailing 3-0 at the midway point of the contest, Hoover got the Griffs on the board with 14:23 elapsed in the second when he beat Pelino with a one-timer from the bottom of the right face-off circle during a two-man advantage for Canisius.

Lapid made it a one-goal game just 51 seconds into the third when he redirected home a goalmouth feed from junior Logan Gestro on the rush while Hutchison tied the game at 3-3 with 6:47 remaining in regulation as he stuffed home a loose puck from the top of the crease for his team-leading 10th of the campaign.

The game remained tied through the remainder of regulation and two overtime sessions, sending the game to a sudden-victory shootout. In the second round of the shootout, Barczewski denied Bentley's Jonathan Desbiens while Hoover scored on Pelino to earn the extra point for the Griffs.

Earlier in the contest, Bentley scored twice in a 1:34 span midway through the first period to build a 2-0 cushion. Novak deposited a Santerno feed into the Canisius goal from close range at the 10:08 mark of the frame to open the scoring before Santerno followed with a power-play tally that saw him beat Barczewski with a wrist shot over the right shoulder from the top of the slot less than two minutes later to give the Falcons a two-goal cushion.

Hamblet stretched the Falcons margin to 3-0 in the opening minute of the second period with a shorthanded goal, capitalizing on a turnover to break free of the Canisius defense before firing a shot over the blocker of Barczewski, setting the stage for Canisius' comeback.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"Obviously it was a crazy game. I didn't feel that we were very sharp for the first two periods. They got a power-play goal, a shorthanded goal, and an even-strength goal and they're up 3-0 and credit our guys, they were scrappy, they competed. We get up a big power-play goal late in the second to make it 3-1 and we had a conversation a locker room before the third that something had to change. We needed to change the way the game was going. In the third period, there were lots of power plays. Both teams had 5-on-3 opportunities, it was a bit all over the place, but we get two goals and tie it up and it goes into overtime and we have some experience in that situation on the road. So, that was good for our team and 3-on-3 is exciting, shootouts are obviously exciting and the shootout goes our way and we get the extra points. But, we're definitely not satisfied. We need to continue to get better. It wasn't our best game. But sometimes you take the two points, recover and focus on tomorrow.

"Momentum is very real in hockey games. Barczewski was making some huge saves and keeping us in it and then, it's just chipping away. Our penalty kill was great tonight, that also gives us some momentum when we can get some big kills, especially in 5-on-3 situations. It builds momentum on our bench and I think it goes the other way for the opponent. If you don't score in the 5-on-3, you can get frustrated. I don't know if that happened to Bentley tonight, but I liked our resiliency. Our guys stayed relatively calm in pretty high-emotion game. That momentum swing in the third gave us some good energy and in overtime it was top line versus top line and they have a great line and our guys are our clicking right now, so we played them a ton and Hoover gets a big goal in the shootout. So, momentum, it happens, it's real, and we were able to capitalize with it tonight."
