Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Posts 2-1 Victory at Binghamton

Canisius used goals from sophomore Alessio Atzori and senior Troy Brady, along with a nine-save effort from freshman keeper Fabio D'Errico, to record a 2-1 victory over Binghamton in collegiate men's soccer action Friday at the Bearcat Sports Complex in Vestal, N.Y.

Freshman Federico Mereto assisted on both goals for the Golden Griffins, who evened their record at 1-1-0 on the young season while the Bearcats moved to 1-2-0 with Friday's setback.

Atzori staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead at the 17:16 mark of the contest when he collected a cross from Mereto in the middle of the box and deposited it into the lower right-hand corner of the net for his first of the campaign.

Brady doubled the Griffs advantage to 2-0 just before the 63rd minute, taking advantage of a Mereto pass to get behind the Binghamton defense before placing the ball past Bearcats keeper Mats Roorda and under the crossbar for his second goal of the season.

Binghamton got on the board in the 84th minute as a throw in by the Bearcats made its way into the box before a clearing attempt by the Canisius defense deflected off a Binghamton player and into the net to make it a one-goal game.

The Bearcats pressed for an equalizer in the final minutes of regulation and had their best chance in the final seconds as a free kick fell to the feet of Michael Bush, but D'Errico was in position to make the stop on Bush's point-blank attempt and send Canisius to victory.

Making his collegiate debut, D'Errico made seven of his nine saves in the first half as Binghamton put seven of its 10 attempts in the opening frame on target but were unable to find the back of the net. Roorda finished the contest with one save for the Bearcats.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"This was a very important win for our young team tonight. We have been struggling to find a rhythm in the early part of the season, so I hope this will settle us down and give us some confidence going into another tough game on Sunday against a talented Northern Kentucky squad."
