Garlent Taken Fourth Overall in 2019 NLL Entry Draft

Former Canisius defensive standout Holden Garlent was selected by the Saskatchewan Rush with the fourth overall pick in the 2019 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft Tuesday at Xfinity Live! in Philadelphia.

Garlent becomes the 11th player in school history to be selected in the NLL Draft and the eighth to be picked in the first round. He is also the second Golden Griffin to be taken in the first round in as many seasons as former Canisius teammate Connor Kearnan was taken 11th by the San Diego Seals in last year's entry draft.

"It's a tremendous honor to be selected by the Saskatchewan Rush with the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NLL Entry Draft," Garlent said. "(Rush head coach Derek Keenan) and I have a good relationship from our time together with the Brookline Lacrosse Club. He's a great coach and he likes the style of play that I bring. I hope that we can build on that relationship and see where it can take us."

A native of Thorold, Ontario, Garlent started all 48 games played during his three seasons with the Golden Griffins, recording a school-record 55 caused turnovers to go along with 110 ground balls, seven goals and seven assists.

The two-time All-MAAC First Team selection, Garlent led Canisius during the 2019 season with 26 caused turnovers and ranked second on the squad with 35 ground balls. His 26 caused turnovers were the second most in a season in school history as he ranked second in the MAAC in total caused turnovers and third in caused turnovers per game (1.63). Garlent was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week after setting the school's single-game record with six caused turnovers in 13-10 triumph at Mercer.

As a sophomore, Garlent started all 17 games played as he helped Canisius claim its third MAAC Tournament title. He ranked second on the team with 17 caused turnovers and was fourth on squad with 36 ground balls.

"Our program is excited for Holden being selected in the first round tonight," said Canisius head coach Mark Miyashita, who was selected first overall in the 2003 NLL Entry Draft. "In the past two years he has grown and matured as a student-athlete, leader and person that is ready for the challenge of playing at the next level in the National Lacrosse League. On behalf of our current players and alumni, we congratulate him on this great accomplishment and look forward to supporting him as he prepares for his professional career!"

The NLL is North America's premier professional indoor lacrosse league. Founded in 1986, the NLL ranks third in average attendance for pro indoor sports worldwide, behind only the NHL and NBA.
