Rowing Finishes Day at New York State Championships

Recap
The Canisius rowing team raced in its penultimate event of the 2018-19 season on Saturday, taking part in the New York State Championships on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Gearing up for the MAAC Championship, the Golden Griffins sent out crews for the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice four.

Starting the day for the Griffs was the varsity eight boat, placing second in Heat 2 ahead of conference foe Manhattan and third among all 13 boats with a 6:52.015 time that earned them a spot in the Women's Collegiate Eight final. The novice four followed later in the morning by finishing fifth out of six crews in Heat 2, clocking in at the 10:08.117 mark to go to the Women's Novice Collegiate Four petite final. Finally, in the Women's Collegiate JV Eight race, the Griffs' second varsity eight placed fifth in a seven-boat competition with a time of 7:26.936, beating out sixth-place Manhattan but coming in behind first-place Marist.

In the afternoon, the varsity eight did not fare as well in the Collegiate Eight final, as a 7:01.156 time placed them fifth while MAAC rival Marist took the top spot. The novice four, meanwhile, finished in sixth in their petite final with a 10:01.744 posting.

Head Coach Kerri Brace's Postrace Comments
"Today's racing allowed us an opportunity to see where we stacked up against MAAC foes Marist and Manhattan two weeks before the conference championship. In all three events, we raced hard and continued to work on our growth as individual crews and as a team. The novice four, comprised of three girls who walked on within the last six weeks and second year coxswain Brittany Gorczyca, gained a lot of experience in their two races today as a very young crew. We're excited to have these next two weeks to continue to develop and prepare for MAACs."

Up Next
The Blue and Gold will have an extra week to prepare for the MAAC Championship, heading down to Camden, N.J., on May 19 for the conference's signature regatta.
