Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Falls Twice to Notre Dame

The Canisius baseball team was unable to take either game of a doubleheader from Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind. Holding the lead going into the ninth inning of game one, the Blue and Gold fell as the Fighting Irish walked off, 5-4, while the second game saw the Golden Griffins fail to score a run a 3-0 loss.

The Golden Griffins moved to 22-25 overall, and Notre Dame shifted to 21-26 in 2019.

For the Griffs in game one, senior Conner Morro led the way with a two-run homer and two runs scored, while junior Jacob Victor notched two hits in the second half of the twin-bill. On the home side, Spencer Myers tallied two hits in both contests, scoring two runs and driving in two RBI on Saturday.

GAME ONE RECAP
Notre Dame opened the scoring in the second frame, as Jared Miller doubled to the right field wall to bring in Eric Gilgenbach.

Canisius answered back in the third with runners on the corners, as Victor hit a ball that was thrown away by the Fighting Irish's shortstop, allowing fellow junior Andy Leader come across for the Griffs' first run.

Morro made it 2-1 for the Griffs in the fourth, as he scored on a dropped fly ball when redshirt-freshman Mike Steffan hit a ball to the warning track.

Morro added to the lead in the eighth, following a Stephen Bennett walk with a two-out home run to left and extended the game to 4-1 Canisius.

Notre Dame cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, scoring one run on a bases-loaded walk to Jake Singer and another run on a Daniel Jung sacrifice fly.

Myers tied the game in the ninth with a single that brought in Gilgenbach before Niko Kavadas drew the bases-loaded walk to push across the winning run.

Notre Dame got 7.2 innings from Tommy Sheehan, who allowed two unearned runs on four hits. Anthony Holubecki followed that effort by allowing two runs without recording an out, while Evan Tenuta gave up one hit in one inning, and Tommy Vail retired his only batter faced to get the win.

Senior Andrew Sipowicz went five innings, allowing the one run on three hits while fanning six. Fellow senior Jared Kennedy followed by pitching 2.1 innings, retiring the first seven batters he faced before giving up two runs on two hits and two walks. Sophomore Zach Chivers relived Kennedy, throwing 0.2 innings and walking one. Junior Will Frank received the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in 0.1 innings.

GAME TWO RECAP
Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap as Singer singled home Myers in the opening frame.

The Irish added to their early lead in the second, with Kavadas drawing another bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0.

Gilgenbach gave the game its final score, 3-0, with one swing in the sixth, putting out a solo shot to left.

Cameron Junker earned the win, working six shutout innings, striking out 10 and surrendering three hits, while Vail tossed three innings and struck out seven to get the save.

Handed the loss, senior Nolan Hunt finished his day with two runs on four hits in his four innings. Freshman David Yankowski pitched two innings after Hunt, allowing one run on two hits, and junior Kyle Warner ended the game by registering three strikeouts and one hit over two frames.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Today was a tough one — we had a good start from Sip and clutch hitting from Morro but just lacked execution late which left us on the wrong side of game one. It's almost like we have been stuck in the fog of finals and our bye week, and we need to get some fresh air back in our lungs and tomorrow is a new day to do that."

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's games were the first and second all-time meetings between the two programs.
• Canisius is now 5-11 all-time against ACC competition.
• Morro's homer was his team-leading fifth of the season.
• Sipowicz has not allowed multiple walks in a start since March 23.
• Sipowicz's three hits allowed matched his season-low from Feb. 15 at N.C. Central.
• Victor's two hits in game two were his 12th multi-hit contest.
